Ship Timbers at Paya Pasir
This contribution is a report on an underwater salvation operation carried out in 1989 in a heavily looted large pond at Paya Pasir, thought to have functioned as a landing place for ships serving the Kota Cina settlement. A large amount of broken parts of ships and boats of various sizes were recovered, drawn and studied, together with a large quantity of pottery sherds. The assembly of hulls in Southeast Asian shipbuilding traditions
This article describes the techniques used in Southeast Asian boats and ships to assemble planks and frames as observed over the past two millennia in archaeological and ethnographical contexts. Planks were first lashed with vegetal fibre and dowelled, with frames also lashed to planks. The sewing of the planks later gave way to treenails only, with frames still lashed to planks.
