A dynamic modelling of the regional and international political economy of US aid to Pakistan
This study takes a unique approach by empirically examining the political economy of US aid to Pakistan in the South Asian regional strategic context, including the geopolitics of China, India, Iran, and Russia. Using the dynamic Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) method from 1971 to 2016, we find that US economic assistance responds positively to regional wars in Afghanistan and the Indo-Russian strategic relationship in the long run. The imp…
Savage West
Alan Weltziens’s book is both timely and valuable, written before the success of Jane Campion’s film of Thomas Savage’s most famous novel The Power of the Dog (2021). Weltzien is a longtime admirer of Savage’s fiction, and this biography is “an act of recovery” intending “to reverse his sad tale of obscurity” (pp. 12, 6). The book achieves this without doubt, setting about a detailed examination of Savage’s life and family, his acute sense of pla…

American Youth Cultures
GBS_insertPreviewButtonPopup('ISBN:9780748619337);Surfing, punk rock, Dawson's Creek, teen movies, MTV and S. E. Hinton's The Outsiders are among the many popular cultural landmarks examined in American Youth Cultures. Key questions are raised about the significance of youth within Ame…
Kane and Double on the Principle of Rational Explanation
Using Jaegwon Kim's framework of explanatory realism versus explanatory irrealism, in addition to some observations about the metaphysics and epistemology of explanation, I re-examine the disagreement between Robert Kane and Richard Double over the principle of rational explanation. I defend Kane's account of dual rationality and argue that Double's principle has a narrower range of application than he claims. I also show that, contrary to what D…
Affective Critical Regionality
Affective Critical Regionality offers a new approach to developing a sharper, more nuanced understanding of the relations between place, space, memory and affect. It builds on the author’s extensive work on the American West, where he developed the idea of ‘expanded critical regionalism’ to underline the West as multiple, dynamic and relational; engaged in global / local processes, tensions between the rooted and the routed, and increasingly as r…
American Cultural Studies
Exploring the central themes in modern American cultural studies and discussing how these themes can be interpreted, American Cultural Studies offers a wide-ranging overview of different aspects of American cultural life such as religion, gender and sexuality, regionalism, and ethnicity and immigration. The fourth edition has been revised throughout to take into account the developments of the last four years. Updates and revisions include:discus…
Richard Aquila. The Sagebrush Trail
Richard Aquila’s The Sagebrush Trail: Western Movies and Twentieth-Century America promises to be “a history of western movies but also a history of twentieth-century America” (3) and it certainly achieves this goal. Aquila provides an overview and survey in chronological order, of films made from the early 1900s to the twenty-first century, from Edwin S. Porter’s The Great Train Robbery in 1903 to Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained in 2012. Th…
Dollar in the Teeth”
This article aims to show the complex cultural and political intertextualities that feed into Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained” as a post-Western through examining its relationships with Jamaican reggae and film, Blaxploitation, and the many traditions of the US Western in popular culture

Corruption, democracy and Asia-Pacific countries
This paper argues that the relationship between democracy and corruption is non-monotonic. When a country shifts from autocratic rule to highly imperfect democracy (an ‘electoral democracy’) it is frequently perceived that the level of corruption increases. Conversely, when the democracy level is already relatively high (approaching ‘mature democracy’) an increase in the level of democracy is typically expected to decrease the level of corruption…
Reasons and the First-Person
In two recent papers, Jaegwon Kim offers an account of action explanation that is agent-centered and reasons-based. I argue that, despite his claims to the contrary, Kim’s proposal points the way to a pluralist view of explanation that might resolve the problem of explanatory exclusion and provide a way for nonreductive physicalists to escape the supervenience/exclusion argument
Affective Landscapes
This essay examines, in Ben Highmore's words, the implications of “a materialist turn towards the immaterial, towards affect, towards thinglyness, the senses” and how this might be determined by “the social world that produced them.” In viewing the “social,” or “sociocultural,” as always affective, and in viewing the significance of landscape in terms of how people define themselves and their relations to the world, this essay explores affect's k…

The compass of possibilities
This article uses the works of the writer, memoirist, and Lakewood, California public official, D. J. Waldie to deepen our concept of “region” and to re-assess many of the stereotypical discourses associated with the American suburbs. In the fashionable parlance of Mike Davis’ City of Quartz, Los Angeles has become defined by its “suburban badlands”; however, Waldie‘s work takes a different view in which his suburban home in LA is the focus for a…
Explanatory Exclusion and the Intensionality of Explanation
Ausonio Marras has argued that Jaegwon Kim's principle of explanatory exclusion depends on an implausibly strong interpretation of explanatory realism that should be rejected because it leads to an extensional criterion of individuation for explanations. I examine the role explanatory realism plays in Kim's justification for the exclusion principle and explore two ways in which Kim can respond to Marras's criticism. The first involves separating …

Why We Should Lower Our Expectations about the Explanatory Gap
I argue that the explanatory gap is generated by factors consistent with the view that qualia are physical properties. I begin by considering the most plausible current approach to this issue based on recent work by Valerie Hardcastle and Clyde Hardin. Although their account of the source of the explanatory gap and our potential to close it is attractive, I argue that it is too speculative and philosophically problematic. I then argue that the ex…

From Story to Film
This essay examines the different ways in which Annie Proulx, in her story “Brokeback Mountain,” scriptwriters Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana, and Ang Lee in his film address the central tensions between desire and social conditioning through a re-exploration of the western genre. Using the concept of ”in-between space,” the article shows how the ”text” (i.e., story/film) is the product of many hands each bringing certain knowledge and approache…

Why do people fail to turn good intentions into action? The role of executive control processes in the translation of healthy eating intentions into action in young Scottish adults
Our findings will add to understanding about the role of executive control in translating intentions into actions and may demonstrate potential for future public health interventions. If participants with weak executive control are found to be less likely to eat as they intend than those with strong executive control, then interventions that reduce the load on these executive processes may increase chances of successful intention-behaviour transl…

Supervenience and Psycho-Physical Dependence

Physicalism, Supervenience, and Dependence
Andrew Botterell (this volume) has offered a fine response to my article â Supervenience and Psycho-Physical Dependenceâ (Campbell 2000). In my original article, I argued that Donald Davidsonâ s brand of supervenience should be understood as a relation between predicates rather than properties, that this formulation captures a form of psycho-physical dependence that eludes other forms of supervenience, and that, as such, it might be useful to rev…
The look of hope or the look of sadness
This article examines the work of Robert Frank with reference to his seminal photographic work, The Americans, and its relationships to his later post-1970s images. It argues that the 'outside eye' he brought to the US post-war consensus offered him a new comparative critical position and represented a fundamental, counter-cultural shift in the tradition of documentary photography. This vision formed around Frank's multiple 'dialogues', with the …

This article examines the legacy of John Brinckerhoff Jackson whose work on American cultural landscapes has had an immense direct and indirect influence on subsequent writers in a number of fields of American Studies. This article examines the western ‘roadscape’ in Jackson’s work as a hybrid, dialogical contact zone that offers a particularly relevant social vision of the New West as mobile and diasporic. In this respect, as in so many other as…
