Caring Too Much or Too Little? Relations Among Motivations for Social Withdrawal, Empathy, and Prosociality in Emerging Adulthood
Most previous work examining relations between social withdrawal and social cognition has focused primarily on empathy‐related behaviors in shy children. However, there are different underlying reasons to withdraw from social interactions, which may be differentially related to aspects of social cognition throughout the lifespan. The present study investigated relations among the different motivations for social withdrawal (i.e., shyness, avoidan…
I'm Pregnant, What Do I Do
Background Accurate, timely, and supportive information is important for high‐quality abortion care. Limited research explores how people find and use online sources of information (OSI) during the abortion process, particularly in Britain. Understanding experiences of using OSI is important for the development of person‐centered services and resources. Methods We conducted a thematic analysis of qualitative data from 41 semi‐structured interview…

Respect Your Elders
Erikson's theory of psychosocial development defines generativity as the drive to benefit future generations and leave a legacy. Generativity has been shown to predict life satisfaction, but generative concern and action can be impacted by factors such as perceived respect from younger generations. This study utilized caregiving grandparents aged 40 and older to assess the extent to which perceived respect mediated the relation between generativi…
Without shelter, people die
Objective: To analyze disparities in causes of mortality between unhoused people in King County, Washington and the general population in Washington. Methods: We built a database from the King County Medical Examiner’s list of presumed homeless decedents, 2009–2019, and worked with a homeless advocacy organization to gather detailed cause and mode of death information for each case. Results: The average homeless decedent was 50 years old at death…
From “Angelegenheit Großdeutschlands” to “Österreichische Abende”
Österreichische Abende, or Austrian Evenings, were a series unique to the 1945 Salzburg Festival. These six solo recitals, five of which featured singers, highlighted Austrian musical culture by recruiting Austrian performers to perform Austrian music in an Austrian setting. For the first time since the Annexation in 1938, Salzburg Festival administrators had the opportunity, albeit with limited resources, to assert an identity separate from Germ…

Translating an Oriental Frame Tale and its Translator in Hapsburg Spain
In comparison with earlier, medieval translations of Kalila wa-Dimna, such as the well-known Calila e Dimna (1251) or the Exemplario contra los engaños y peligros del mundo (1483), the version composed by Vicente Bratutti from a sixteenth-century Turkish source, the Espejo político y moral para príncipes y ministros y de todo género de personas (1654, 1659), has been the focus of much less scholarship. Yet, as I will argue, it is worthy of critic…
The Development and Implementation of Gathering Grounds, a Virtual Community of Practice Rooted in Indigenous Praxis
In a 2010 article, Traci Sylva, Pauline Chinn, and Charles Kinoshita note that Indigenous communities of practice generate solutions to “highly valued, real-world problems'” by connecting “science to culture, place, and community.” To provide Native American communities a collaborative space to address COVID-19, we developed Gathering Grounds, an Indigenous community of practice, or I-CP. Over one hundred individuals from Native communities natio…
Depressive Symptoms and Suicidality of Those Raised in Kincare
The rate at which children are raised in kincare has steadily been on the rise. Prior research indicates that this group of individuals are at an increased risk of mental health problems. The current study examined the suicidality and depressive symptoms of adults who were raised in kincare compared to those raised by their parents. There were a total of 1,486 participants, 171 of whom were adults raised in kincare, and 1,315 who were raised by o…
Home-Made from A to Z
The contributions of Oskar Hagen, Werner Josten, and Bayard Quincy Morgan were essential to the successful production of Händel's Julius Caesar at Smith College in 1927. This article presents and examines previously unpublished artefacts associated with the first performance of a Händel opera in America to consider its homemade nature and the significance of homemade music within the context of the early music revival. Considering the hegemony of…

Dental microwear texture analysis of Homo sapiens sapiens
OBJECTIVES: The current study seeks to determine if a sample of foragers, farmers, and pastoralists are distinguishable based on their dental microwear texture signatures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included a sample of 719 individuals from 51 archeological sites (450 farmers, 192 foragers, 77 pastoralists). All were over age 12 and sexes were pooled. Using a Sensofar® white-light confocal profiler we collected dental microwear texture anal…

Life, Death and Care on the Otago Goldfields
In 2017 two unmarked graves were disturbed by tree removal in the Cromwell Cemetery in Central Otago, New Zealand. These were the burials of two men who probably died in the 1890s, and examination of their remains indicated that both were manual workers with evidence of strong musculature and also numerous injuries; evidence of the harsh working life led by many in the nineteenth century Otago goldfields. This paper considers these two individual…
Barriers to Pregnancy Spacing in Women Living with HIV
For reproductive-age women living with HIV, birth spacing allows for optimization of maternal health and viral suppression to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV. We conducted semi-structured informational interviews to explore use of contraception for birth spacing. Interviews were transcribed and analyzed. Audio files were reviewed to capture non-explicit data. We interviewed 18 multiparous HIV positive women. All described experiences …
Celestina and the Human Condition in Early Modern Spain and Italy
Celestina by Fernando de Rojas is a canonical work of late medieval Spanish literature and one of the earliest European "best-sellers". However, while we have clear evidence of its popularity and influence due to detailed research on its print history and editions, we have not adequately answered the question of precisely why it continued to hold such appeal for early modern audiences. This book explores Celestina 's role as a key interlocutor in…
Children’s Understanding of No Diving Warning Signs
The current study examined children's understanding of No Diving warning signs. Normally-developing 7 to 10 year olds were asked questions to assess their understanding of text, images, and main messages on No Diving warning signs. These structured interviews were audio recorded and responses were later coded. Results revealed that children understood the behavior advised against (diving), why it is prohibited (can hit head on the bottom), and wh…
Trials and Triumph
The rural context at times is characterized by heteronormativity and conservatism. For individuals who identify as a sexual minority (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and/or queer), the rural context may pose particular challenges to the development of a healthy, coherent sense of self. Seven young adults (18-24) who identified as gay or lesbian participated in in-depth interviews regarding their experiences coming out in a rural Appalachian c…
Hunter‐gatherer variability
Often it is assumed that hunter‐gatherer dentitions are dominated by heavy attrition. Recent analyses, however, have shown unexpected variability in the pattern of wear between groups. It had been previously noted that wear differed between neighboring groups on the Murray River, Australia. This analysis extends that geographic scope as well as focusing on wear across the dentition, including the premolars. The samples came from coastal and river…
The Challenge of Political Islam
Based on Islamist writings, political tracts, and interviews with Islamists, this book examines Muslim-Christian relations in Egypt from the perspective of Islamic conceptions of citizenship, and provides non-Muslim responses to those views.

An 'official' Islamic response to the Egyptian al-jiha ¥ d movement
This essay explores the debate about the role of Islam in political and social life by looking at the arguments that were used to defend and to prosecute the assassins of Anwar Sadat. It focuses on two texts: The Neglected Duty , which was the political treatise of the Islamist group which assassinated Sadat; and the Egyptian religious establishment's response to it. The essay examines what the two texts say about such concepts as unbelief, an Is…

Toward Meaningful Protection of Worker Health and Safety
In the annals of job health and safety, 1974 was a signal year. It produced an epidemic of occupational liver cancer associated with vinyl chloride disclosure of a plan to soft-pedal federal regulation of industrial hazards in return for contributions to the 1972 Nixon reelection campaign, and the publication of a brace of exposes decrying the human toll taken by workplace perils. These events furnish hard evidence that the bright hopes raised by…
