Practices of perseverance
The seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries saw a growing conflict between the crown, landowners, and nomadic Sámi in central Sweden. Laws and regulations stipulated that non-sedentary Sámi be banished to inland northern Sweden, the ‘lappmarker’, or take up indentured service under the control of the freeholders of the parishes. Reindeer pasture was an economic corner stone for many Sámi in central Sweden, but equally important was the hunt. H…
Lives of bronze gods and wooden puppets
Living statues and artificial humans have a long cultural history. They are awe-inspiring because they are entangled with existentialist questions about reality, especially as regards the uncertainty of being. This article explores how humanoid material culture in its different forms was involved in the interaction between myriad human and non-human entities in seventeenth-century Sweden and in the broader context of the emerging global world. We…

The need for a non-militant indigenous historical archaeology in Latin America and beyond. Response to Felix Acuto
Indigenous archaeology and archaeology of Indigeneity are paramount in the contemporary world. We certainly need more of it across the archaeological scale and across the archaeological globe. Archaeology’s unhealthy attachment to colonialism, colonial administration and imperialism keeps on affecting our discipline on all levels. It is therefore encouraging to read Felix Acuto’s call for an engaged and activist Indigenous archaeology of Latin Am…
Voices of the forests. Eviction, control, and the birth of the ‘Parish Lapp’ system in early modern Sweden
This paper examines the birth of the exploitative sockenlappssystemet (the ‘Parish Lapp’ system) in central Sweden during the early eighteenth century. Based on a foundation of control and eviction instituted in earlier laws, the 1720s saw a forceful rise in royal concern over the existence of nomadic Sámi in central Sweden. His Majesty King Fredrik I specifically expressed fear of damage to the resources of the forests through Sámi hunting, espe…
Spaces of Resilience and Resistance
This paper examines traces of Sámi habitation in southern and central Scandinavia, particularly Sweden, addressing the late medieval period to the end of the nineteenth century. It begins with Swedish judicial policy against Sámi nomadism in central Sweden, followed by a discussion of medieval Sámi material culture in southern Scandinavia. Further analysis addresses so-called Parish-Lapp indenture, which allowed nomadic Sámi to escape eviction to…
Being on the Inside, Forgetting to Look Out
Historical archaeology in Scandinavia is an expand- ing field, but despite its global nature, the discipline is trapped in methodological nationalism. The early modern and modern societies are generally studied us- ing the current national borders even though the ma- terial culture should not be constrained in this way. By illustrating with both theoretical and empirical ex- amples, the objective of this paper is to bring about a greater awarenes…
Living on the margin
In 1959, the politics of assimilation led to the creation of a set of municipally organised camps for Roma people in the Stockholm area. The camps were to function as controlled settlements of transition for Roma families awaiting proper homes. This paper focuses on one such camp – the Skarpnäck Camp – which existed longer than anticipated, to the point that its continued operation was criticised as being inconsistent with the government’s assimi…

Mapping Land and People in the North
This paper explores the early modern Swedish expansion in Sápmi[2][1] by examining the mapping of Sámi lands and the exploration and exploitation of Sápmi’s natural resources, in particular in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. In the paper, we analyze this process of expansion as

Political economy and global repercussions
The seven articles of this special issue of Post-Medieval Archaeology provide a background to this paper. Their various interpretations and operationalizations have provided a plethora of perspectives and localities concerning past political economies. This paper aims to further the discussion of political economy and its relevance in historical archaeology. The very many connections between economy, identity, culture, production, mentality and p…
Collecting, connecting, constructing
This article analyses the role of material culture in the enforcing of a colonial order in early modern Sápmi (Land of the Sámi, the indigenous people in northern Norway, Sweden, Finland and the Kola Peninsula in Russia). In addition, the article focuses on the unequal power relations created through the collecting and cultural appropriation of Sámi objects. The 17th century saw a rapid growth of interest in the Sámi and their material culture. C…
Copper worlds
This article analyses the industrial enterprise of the Dutch-born brothers Abraham and Jakob Momma-Reenstierna and their investments in Sápmi and the upper parts of the Torne River Valley, northern Sweden, during the second half of the seventeenth century. The aim is to explore the driving forces behind the industrial projects of the two brothers in a larger global and colonial context. With inspiration from recent critical studies on the simplif…

Embodied colonialism
Silver had an emblematic position in the 17th-century Atlantic world. After the Spanish had discovered silver ores in America, the metal’s meaning became symbolic of colonial dominion, of great wealth and providential fortune. Sweden too initiated a colonial project to obtain silver in the mountainous regions of Lapland. Silver-works were founded in order to refine the metal, and the industry borrowed many ideas from the American plantation syste…
