Underdetermination, weakening, and skepticism
International Trade, Technology, and the Skill Premium
What are the consequences of international trade on the skill premium? We incorporate skill-intensity differences across firms and sectors into a standard model of international trade. Reductions in trade costs reallocate factors toward a country's comparative advantage sectors, increasing the skill premium in countries with a comparative advantage in skill-intensive sectors and decreasing it elsewhere. Reductions in trade costs also reallocate f…

Matching and Inequality in the World Economy
This paper develops tools and techniques to analyze the determinants of factor allocation and factor prices in economies with a large number of goods and factors. The main results of our paper characterize sufficient conditions for robust monotone comparative statics predictions in a Roy-like assignment model. These general results are then used to generate new insights about the consequences of globalization
Spatial Competition with Heterogeneous Firms
I model endogenous horizontal and vertical product differentiation with arbitrarily many heterogeneous firms. Firms are asymmetric in that they differ in their marginal costs. I prove that under an equilibrium refinement, all economically relevant firm outcomes are uniquely determined across all strict subgame perfect Nash equilibria. There are two central results. First, a firm's price, market share, and profit are independent of its neighbors' …

"The Problem of Self-Knowledge in Kant's "Refutation of Idealism
Kant's argumentation in the of Idealism section of The Critique of Pure Reason is-to put it mildly-highly compressed. In fact, a step necessary to the completion of the Refutation appears to be missing altogether. If the self can be directly known to persist through change, the Refutation fails, yet Kant seems not to address such a possibility. This apparent omission has recently drawn the attention of scholars, including Henry Allison and Paul G…

Sklar on Methodological Conservatism
Proponents of the principle of methodological (or epistemic) conservatism face the burden of formulating a version of the principle that has the proper strength. On the most straightforward rendering, methodological conservatism would provide that a belief is justified for someone simply in virtue of being held by that person. But if this were so, the notion of justified belief would collapse into that of belief as such, and methodological conser…
