Whether people justify and challenge economic inequality depends on the activities of social movements
When do people challenge economic inequality and when are they more likely to accept it? Whether people justify inequality is key to challenging or accepting it, but research is inconclusive on how objective economic inequality is related to individuals' justification of inequality. In the present research, we propose that social movements play a key role in framing inequality as unjust so that higher inequality is seen as less just. Our study fo…
How do People Relate to the Police? A Qualitative Study on Motivational Postures Towards the Police in Chile
How do people position themselves towards the police? We draw on Motivational Postures Theory to analyse the relationship between citizens and the police in Chile. We present findings from eleven focus groups conducted among diverse social groups (according to nationality, ethnicity and political stance) in three cities. We aimed to uncover the underlying motives and attitudes that shape public interactions with the police. The results describe t…

Denial of Mass Atrocities and How Perpetrators Group Evade Accusations
Israel's response to the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, has been considered by many international agencies such as the United Nations and the International Court of Justice as violating human rights and international law. However, Israel denied such accusations and is very confident in its innocence and does not attempt to halt the alleged wrongdoing. In this article, by understanding the socio‐historical context of Israeli‐Palestinian relation…
Social Cohesion in (Post‐)Conflict and Divided Societies
Although the study of social cohesion in divided and (post‐)conflict societies has grown steadily within social psychology over the past decades, researchers also argue that addressing social cohesion is a complex task due to its multidimensional and multilevel nature. With this special thematic section, we aim to advance the understanding of the dynamics of social cohesion across contexts marked by deep social divisions and intergroup tensions w…
Police Fairness, Anger and Support for Violent and Non‐Violent Disruptive Actions in Chile
Cross‐sectional research has shown that perceptions of injustice and their resultant emotions are associated with increased support for collective actions. In a three‐wave longitudinal study of Chilean citizens ( N T1 = 2611; N T2 = 1690; N T3 = 1163), using Random Intercept Cross‐Lagged Panel models, we examined the associations over time between perceived procedural justice of the police during protests, anger towards the police, and justificat…
The role of place in intergroup conflicts and intragroup solidarity
People tend to have strong psychological bonds with places such as neighborhoods, schools, towns, and countries. These people–place bonds can be of different nature (e.g., place ownership, place attachment), develop for different reasons (e.g., first arrival, length of stay), and generate different group dynamics in specific contexts. With this special issue, we sought to advance our understanding of the potential of people– place bonds to divide…

Symbolic Exclusion and Historical Negation Regarding the Indigenous Mapuche People
Construcciones identitarias de inmigrantes haitianos en Santiago de Chile desde una perspectiva interseccional

Mismatch Cycles
This paper studies the cyclical dynamics of skill mismatch and quantifies its impact on labor productivity. We build a tractable directed search model, in which workers differ in skills along multiple dimensions and sort into jobs with heterogeneous skill requirements. Skill mismatch arises because of information frictions and is prolonged by search frictions. Estimated to the United States, the model replicates salient business cycle properties …
Autochthony and investment beliefs as bases for territorial ownership and compensation in settler societies
We examined how autochthony belief (entitlements from first arrival) and investment belief (entitlements from working the land) guide attitudes towards territorial compensation of Indigenous groups in settler societies. We expected autochthony and investment beliefs to be respectively related to more and less territorial compensation, via higher and lower perceptions of Indigenous ownership. We tested this in Chile among non-Indigenous Chileans a…
Taking Care of Each Other
In the context of the COVID‐19 pandemic, personal protective measures (e.g., social distancing, handwashing, and mask wearing) have been adopted as a cornerstone to limit the spread of the disease. Yet, the effectiveness of these measures depends on people's levels of adherence. In this article, we apply social‐psychological research to the study of compliance with personal protective measures during the COVID‐19 pandemic in Chile. We consider th…
The impact of a multicultural exchange between indigenous and non-indigenous history teachers for students’ attitudes
This manuscript presents the results of a pilot study, Kuykuitin. A project that provides history teachers of elite schools in Chile with firsthand contact with history teachers in an intercultural school in the Araucanía. This region is the conflict zone with higher levels of violence between the Mapuche and the Chilean State. The pilot study analyzes the perceptions of the students of elite schools in the city’s capital – Santiago – about the M…
Collective memories and present-day intergroup relations
This special thematic section aims to bring together current research on the connections between collective memories – or representations of history – and present-day intergroup relations. Drawing from a multitude of geographical and historical contexts as well as different methodologies, we bring forth ten articles focusing on distinct aspects of the relations between representations of the past and present day intergroup dynamics. The topics co…
Tracing Mapuche Exclusion from Post-Dictatorial Truth Commissions in Chile
This article critically examines the official misrecognition of Mapuche experiences of violence during Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship (1973–1990) in state-sponsored truth commissions in Chile. We examine official post-dictatorial truth commission politics, narratives and procedures, analyzing how they envisioned the Mapuche as a political (absent) subject and how specific and homogenizing notions of victimhood were produced. We draw attention to…

Too long to compensate? Time perceptions, emotions, and compensation for colonial conflicts

The Abortion Referendum in Portugal
February 11th 2007 set the date for what would be an intense and passionate discussion on a gendered health related issue in Portugal: abortion. In the referendum, approximately 44% of the eligible population voted, and from these 59% voted for the legalization of abortion in Portugal. Hence, this referendum brought about changes in the Portuguese law, which now allows legal abortion to occur at the desire of the woman until the 10th week of preg…
