Ladefoged, Peter
Peter Ladefoged (1925–2006) was one of the great phoneticians of the 20th century, a pioneer in instrumental phonetic fieldwork who was equally interested in theoretical linguistics, especially distinctive feature theory.

A cross-language acoustic space for vocalic phonation distinctions
Many languages use phonation types for phonemic or allophonic distinctions. This study examines the acoustic structure of the phonetic space for vowel phonations across languages. Our sample of eleven languages includes languages with contrastive modal, breathy, creaky, lax, tense, harsh, and/or pharyngealized phonations, and languages with allophonic nonmodal phonation on particular tones. Proposal for superscript diacritics for prenasalization, preglottalization and preaspiration
The IPA currently does not specify how to represent prenasalization, preglottalization or preaspiration. We first review some current transcription practices, and phonetic and phonological literature bearing on the unitary status of prenasalized, preglottalized and preaspirated segments. Funding for student members to attend ICPhS
The Association will offer two kinds of travel awards to student members presenting their work at the International Congress of Phonetic Sciences in August 2015. Gösta Bruce Scholarships are funded by the Gösta Bruce Memorial Fund, established by the family of the late Gösta Bruce, previous President of the IPA. The IPA certificate exam will be offered in connection with ICPhS in Glasgow, on Sunday 9 August 2015. It will also be offered in London (at UCL) twice, on Wednesday 20 May 2015 and Tuesday 1 September 2015. (All offerings are subject to confirmation, requiring a sufficient number of entrants.)

The 18th International Congress of Phonetic Sciences was held in Glasgow, Scotland, on 10-14 August 2015. It was jointly organized by the University of Glasgow, Queen Margaret University, University of Strathclyde, and the University of Edinburgh. Incorporation of the International Phonetic Association
On 22 February 2014, the IPA Council voted to form a limited company, ‘The International Phonetic Association Ltd’, in the UK. By the time of publication of this issue of the Journal , the Association expects to have completed all necessary steps to do so. Incorporation will make banking much easier for the Association, but should have no effect on members or on how the Association conducts its affairs

IPA members’ reduced registration fee for ICPHS2015
IPA members will benefit from a reduced registration fee for the 18th International Congress of Phonetic Sciences, to be held in Glasgow in August 2015. The fee reduction will be 30 GBP for Full/Life members, and 20 GBP for Student members. Only members whose 2015 IPA membership is current (fully paid) by 1 February 2015 will receive this benefit. In a study of optical cues to the visual perception of stress, three American English talkers spoke words that differed in lexical stress and sentences that differed in phrasal stress, while video and movements of the face were recorded. In June 2011, the IPA Council received a formal request from William Barry and Jürgen Trouvain to vote on the adoption of a standard IPA symbol for the central open (unrounded) vowel.
