Industrial policy for prematurely deindustrialized economies in the twenty-first century
Deindustrialization has not equally affected countries, either in terms of the share of manufacturing value added in GDP or in terms of industrial employment in total employment. Recent studies also show that, at a sub-sectoral level, the most innovative manufacturing groups are not deindustrializing in both value-added and employment shares. Though manufacturing still matters for sustaining economic growth, its subsectors have different capaciti…
Industrialization and deindustrialization
This article investigates the causes of structural change in Brazil, through the rise and the fall of the manufacturing industry, and the consequences for total factor productivity and manufacturing labour productivity, from 1947 to 2021. Our results show that the industrialization of the Brazilian productive structure is positively associated with expansions in infrastructure investments and with the pursuit of a competitive real exchange rate, …
Sectoral deindustrialization and long-run stagnation of Brazilian manufacturing
In Brazil and elsewhere in the world, diagnoses of deindustrialization are concentrated in aggregate manufacturing, so policies can be ineffective if deindustrialization has a sector-specific component. This study quantifies and analyses deindustrialization for the individualised manufacturing sub-sectors. To do this, unpublished series of the manufacturing sub-sectors' share in the Brazilian GDP from 1970 to 2016 were created, based on official …
Types of occupational relatedness and branching processes across Brazilian regions
This article draws on a large occupational database of 2514 occupations required for 581 industries in 558 microregions and five macroregions in Brazil and shows that occupational relatedness is associated with regional occupational branching (entry of related and exit of unrelated occupations) in a developing country marked by enormous regional disparities. Three types of occupational relatedness were examined: local synergy-, complementarity- a…
Skill relatedness, structural change and heterogeneous regions
Covid Health Structure Index
Many developing countries have highly unequal health systems across their regions. The pandemic of COVID-19 brought an additional challenge, as hospital structures equipped with doctors, intensive care units and respirators are not available to a sufficient extent in all regions. Using Data Envelopment Analysis, we create a COVID Index to verify whether the hospital structures in 543 Brazilian microregions are adequate to deal with COVID-19 and t…
Adensamento produtivo e esgarçamento do tecido industrial brasileiro
