Effects of Fair Workweek Laws on Labor Market Outcomes
This paper models fair workweek regulations that require employers to provide employees with (1) schedule predictability via advance notice of their work schedule and premium payments for short‐notice changes, and (2) access to hours meaning they must offer open hours to existing employees before hiring new workers. The Need for Speed
We use a nonlinear reduction in a bank’s check-cashing fees and variation in regulated check-clearing times to identify the elasticity of demand for cashing checks rather than depositing them. We find that an extra day of check-clearing time makes account holders 65.5% more likely to cash a check than deposit it, which implies they are willing to pay $11.17 per day for faster access to their funds—an effective annualized discount rate of 11,054% …

Workers struggle to understand prospective employers. Through experienced workers’ volunteered reviews, Glassdoor is a platform seeking to provide information about prospective employers to job seekers. We find that the content most valuable to job seekers (negative information) is the kind most risky to supply, pointing to a catch-22. Labor-Market Concentration and Labor Compensation
This article estimates the effect of labor-market concentration on labor compensation across the US private sector since 2000. The authors distinguish between concentration in local labor markets and local product markets while guarding against bias from confounded product-market concentration. Using multiple datasets on parental and non-parental care provided to children up to age six, we quantify differences in American children's care experiences by socioeconomic status (SES), proxied primarily with maternal education. Physician–patient racial concordance and disparities in birthing mortality for newborns
Significance A large body of work highlights disparities in survival rates across Black and White newborns during childbirth. We posit that these differences may be ameliorated by racial concordance between the physician and newborn patient. Findings suggest that when Black newborns are cared for by Black physicians, the mortality penalty they suffer, as compared with White infants, is halved.
