Institutional Evolution of Ancient Greece
The Evolution of Social Institutions
Ancient Greece
This book examines the development of ancient Greek civilization through a path-breaking application of social scientific theories. David B. Small charts the rise of the Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations and the unique characteristics of the later classical Greeks through the lens of ancient social structure and complexity theory, opening up new ideas and perspectives on these societies. He argues that Minoan and Mycenaean institutions evolved f…
A Defective Master Narrative in Greek Archaeology
The tyranny of the text
Theoretical issues concerning the conjunction of texts and archaeological material in social reconstructions have been the focus of attention in recent research in American historical archaeology and in Mesoamerican archaeology (e.g. Carmack and Weeks 1981; Beaudry 1988; Leone and Potter 1988; Little 1992; Marcus 1992). The purpose of this chapter is to introduce the issue of the use of texts and archaeology in social reconstruction to the field …
The Archaic Polis of Azoria
This article seeks to build a structural model for the development of the Cretan polis through an analysis of the civic structure of Archaic Azoria. Azoria’s civic structural network is compared to that of the early polis on mainland Greece. Insights gained from comparative modeling of elite-sponsored civic structure in these two regions are applied to Crete, allowing us to construct a more robust network of early ‘polital’ structure for that isl…

Chapter 10. Rethinking the Historical Dimensions of Mortuary Practices
Recent work in cemetery archaeology has focused on the history of the social emulation. Work in Nisky Hill Cemetery in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, has continued that focus, but also has highlighted the nature of cemeteries as built landscapes. These landscapes provide contexts for additional uses of cemeteries by various community groups in strategies of competition and status construction. The potential for analyzing cemeteries within archaeologica…
The Archaeology of Israel
This challenging volume offers a timely and extensive overview of the current state of archaeology in Israel. Contributed by leading scholars, the essays focus on current problems and cutting-edge issues, ranging from reviews of ongoing excavations to new analytical approaches. Of interest not only to archaeologists, but to social historians as well, the topics include archaeology and social history, archaeology and ethnicity, as well as the over…

Heterarchical Paths to Evolution, The Role of External Economies
Heterarchy is a useful paradigm for reanalyzing aspects of social evolution. It supplies a fresh perspective on the concept of hierarchy and complexity. This study examines the effect of external trade on local social development. The Trobriands and the Yapese empire of the Carolines supply examples of the relationship between the evolution of hierarchy and centrality and the capture of external trade. If external trade is not captured as an econ…
Patronage in Ancient Society
Discussion of a subject central to the society of the ancient Mediterranean. Patronage in Ancient Society was awarded the Croom Helm Ancient History Prize for 1988. This book should be of interest to students and lecturers in social and ancient history as well as classical studies
Phasing Masada's Architecture
Handmade Burnished Ware and Prehistoric Aegean Economics
Attempts to explain the appearance of hand-made coarse ware in the Late Bronze Age Aegean have focused on analysis of decorative or formative elements of decoration or form and not upon mode or locus of production. Furthermore, little emphasis has been placed on locating this ware within the economic context of the Late Helladic world. A reanalysis of this pottery within its context argues strongly that its appearance represents a reaction to inc…

Late Hellenistic Baths in Palestine
This paper focuses on the assertion that Roman baths diffused into late Hellenistic and early Roman period Palestine. Its analysis begins with a division of features of Palestinian baths into builder and user categories. Correlations between these features and the people of ancient Palestine are expressed. In the builder category all the features correlate to building techniques specific to the Near East. In the user category spatial analyses unv…

Studies in Roman Theater Design
Examination of the evidence for Roman theaters indicates that the majority were not constructed following Vitruvian method. To date, attempts to find a method of design that successfully explains other Roman theater designs have been limited or unsatisfactory. This article defines a basic design which is applicable to the majority of Roman theaters. On the basis of available evidence, it seems that Roman architects were designing theaters with a …
