  • Religion, Hiv/Aids and Sexual Risk-Taking Among Men in Ghana

    Open Access•Stephen Obeng Gyimah, E Y Tenkorang et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2010

Although a growing body of research has linked religious involvement with HIV/AIDS protective behaviour in Africa, the focus has mainly been on women. Given the patriarchal nature of African culture, this paper argues for the inclusion of men, a critical group whose sexual behaviours have increasingly been linked to the spread and sustenance of the virus in the region. Drawing on different theoretical discourses and using data from the 2003 Ghana…

  • The Use of Injections for Treating Childhood Diseases

    Gabriel B Fosu•ARTICLE•Sociological Focus•1992•Referências: 8

The author reports findings from an assessment of the extent to which injections are used by mothers in Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, and Zimbabwe to treat cough and fever in their children as well as the factors which influence their use. Two rationales are presented for conducting the study. First, the prevalence of HIV infection in many countries and the potential for infection using contaminated needles points to the need to minimize injections excep…

  • Perceptions of Mental Disorders in the Context of Social Change

    Open Access•Gabriel B Fosu•ARTICLE•Central Issues in Anthropology•1992•Citada por: 2•Referências: 17

Using data from a sample survey undertaken in 1982, this study examines the perceptions and attitudes of 1000 women in Accra toward mental disorders. The majority of the women in the sample perceive the causes of mental disorders to be stress‐related, though some serious mental disorders are still thought to be of supernatural origin. The implications of such perceptions for an effective integration of mental health care into primary health servi…

  • Access to Health Care in Urban Areas of Developing Societies

    Gabriel B Fosu•ARTICLE•Journal of Health and Social…•1989•Citada por: 19

Emphasis on rural health problems has led to a relative neglect of urban health issues in developing societies. Yet the fact that a large proportion of the limited financial and human resources is allocated to urban health care makes it imperative for researchers and health planners to evaluate the effectiveness of the urban health care system. This paper examines data on health care utilization from a sample survey of 1500 households conducted i…

  • Fertility and Family Planning in Accra

    Open Access•Gabriel B Fosu•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•1986

Data from a sample interview survey conducted in Accra in 1982 show that there is a very high level of knowledge of contraceptive methods among mothers aged 25–39 years (92%). However, only about 41% of the women had ever used any form of contraception, and only 18% were using modern methods at the time of the study. This is low for a city where an official family planning programme has been in operation for 15 years, even when the confounding ef…

  • Implications of mortality and morbidity for health care delivery in Ghana

    Open Access•Gabriel B Fosu•ARTICLE•Sociology of Health & Illness•1986•Citada por: 6•Referências: 4

The lack of adequate statistics makes it almost impossible to get an accurate picture of the health situation in developing countries. Based on the fragmentary data available, this paper examines the determinants and consequences of 'unnecessary' deaths and ill health in Ghana. Even though the main causes of death among the majority of the people are preventable, the health care delivery system emphasizes curative rather than preventive, and urba…
