The Promise of Patriarchy
The image of the Nation of Islam (Noi) in the popular imagination is of a secret society that promulgates controversial and bizarre beliefs of racial hatred and anti-Semitism. Highly visible male figures, notably Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, and Louis Farrakhan, have helped shape the representation of the Noi as a radical, authoritarian, masculinist cult. Why would women willingly and actively join the Nation of Islam's strictly ordered male-centric …

Framing the Black Panthers
This work is a look at how the Black Panthers became symbols of black militancy in America. The Sixties may be over, but the Black Panthers, the ultimate symbol of black power, radical inspiration, and the excesses of the decade, live on. Books on the Panthers continue to be written, hip-hop artists continue to draw inspiration from them, and so many films are made about the Panthers that there is now an annual Black Panther film festival. In thi…

Fanning the Flames of Racial Discord
The Black Panther Party and the news media engaged in a dialogic relationship that shaped public representations of black nationalism and black radicalism. During the first two years of the group's existence, the national elite press paid limited attention to the group. When they did cover the controversies surrounding the Panthers, the stories fit into narrow frames that underscored national ideologies about race and social protest. The coverage …
