Corporate governance mechanisms and bank profitability
In recent decades, the idea of a governance framework that prioritizes stakeholders' interests in firms has gained popularity worldwide, particularly in response to global financial crises. Corporate governance (CG) and its impact on financial profitability revolve around how firms adopt best practices, structure their boards and adhere to legal frameworks. Though there are studies that have been conducted connecting corporate governance and bank…
Gender and Collaboration
We connect gender disparities in research output and collaboration patterns in economics. We first document large gender gaps in research output. These gaps persist across fifty years despite a significant increase in the fraction of women in economics during that time. We further show that output differences are closely related to differences in the coauthorship networks of men and women: women have fewer collaborators, collaborate more often wi…
Narrow Identities
A person's social identity has many facets, involving language, personal interests, customs, religion, and ethnicity, among other attributes. Yet, all over the world many people seek to define themselves in exclusive terms. This paper develops a simple model of personal incentives and group interests to offer one possible explanation for the puzzle.
Networks in Economics
The study of networks is a dynamic and exciting field of research in contemporary economics. This chapter traces its origins and illustrates its reach. Social and economic life occurs at the intersection of the global (large firms, international markets) and the local (small overlapping neighborhoods). Game theory is well suited for the study of behavior in small exclusive groups; general equilibrium theory helps to understand large anonymous sys…

Social Networks and Research Output
We study how knowledge about the social network of an individual researcher, as embodied in his coauthor relations, helps us in developing a more accurate prediction of his or her future productivity. We find that incorporating information about coauthor networks leads to a modest improvement in the accuracy of forecasts on individual output, over and above what we can predict based on the knowledge of past individual output. Second, we find that…

Group Size and Collective Action
This article examines the hypothesis that group size is inversely related to successful collective action. A distinctive aspect of the article is that it combines the analysis of primary data collected by the authors with a game-theoretic model. The model considers a group of people protecting a commonly owned resource from excessive exploitation. The authors view monitoring of individual actions as a collective good and focus on third-party moni…
A Noncooperative Model of Network Formation
We present an approach to network formation based on the notion that social networks are formed by individual decisions that trade off the costs of forming and maintaining links against the potential rewards from doing so. We suppose that a link with another agent allows access, in part and in due course, to the benefits available to the latter via his own links. Thus individual links generate externalities whose value depends on the level of dec…
Learning from Neighbours
When payoffs from different actions are unknown, agents use their own past experience as well as the experience of their neighbors to guide their decision making. In this paper, the authors develop a general framework to study the relationship between the structure of these neighborhoods and the process of social learning. They show that, in a connected society, local learning ensures that all agents obtain the same payoffs in the long run. Thus,…
