This article has a dual purpose. On the one hand, I propose a Gnostic reading of Krzysztof Kieślowski's The Double Life of Véronique (1991). In this interpretation, the figure of the puppeteer, who is eventually revealed to be the maker of the film's story, stands for the Gnostic demiurge. Using the cases of Pavel Florensky and Edith Stein (who were killed in a Soviet and a Nazi camp, respectively) as a jumping board, the author proposes a phenomenological reconstruction of the process of “demolition of man” (Primo Levi), to which prisoners were subjected both in Hitler's and in Stalin's camps.
