  • Late-Holocene diatom community response to climate driven chemical changes in a small, subarctic lake, Northwest Territories, Canada

    Open Access•Paul B Hamilton, Scott J Hutchinson et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2021•Referências: 2

The paleolimnological record of diatoms and climate, spanning the last 2800 years, was investigated in a small subarctic lake (Pocket Lake) that from AD 1948 to 2004 was contaminated by gold smelting waste. An age-depth model was constructed using a combination of 210 Pb, 14 C, and tephra to determine a 2800 year history of lake ontogeny (natural aging), biological diversity, and regional climate variability. Diatoms form six strong paleoecologic…

  • Reconstruction of Holocene hydroclimatic variability in subarctic treeline lakes using lake sediment grain-size end-members

    Open Access•Andrew L Macumber, Robert T Patterson et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2018•Referências: 4

Current climate trends are expected to result in the northward expansion of the subarctic treeline leading to changes in vegetation cover and permafrost distribution, as they did during the Holocene Climate Optimum when the treeline was 150 km north of its current position. The impacts of these changes on the region’s hydrology are still poorly understood. The grain-size distributions of treeline lake sediments provide an important proxy related …

  • Re-deposited cryptotephra layers in Holocene peats linked to anthropogenic activity

    Open Access•Graeme T Swindles, Jennifer M Galloway et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2013•Citada por: 3•Referências: 12

Tephra layers can form useful age-equivalent stratigraphic markers for correlating palaeoenvironmental sequences and they provide information about the spatio-temporal nature of past volcanic ash fall events. The use of microscopic ‘cryptotephra’ layers has both increased the stratigraphic resolution of tephra sequences in proximal areas and extended the distal application of tephrochronology to regions of the world situated far from volcanoes. E…

  • Diet and Habitat of Mountain Woodland Caribou Inferred from Dung Preserved in 5000-year-old Alpine Ice in the Selwyn Mountains, Northwest Territories, Canada

Open Access•Jennifer M Galloway, Jan Adamczewski et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2012

Alpine ice patches are unique repositories of cryogenically preserved archaeological artefacts and biological specimens. Recent melting of ice in the Selwyn Mountains, Northwest Territories, Canada, has exposed layers of dung accumulated during seasonal use of ice patches by mountain woodland caribou of the ancestral Redstone population over the past ca. 5250 years. Although attempts to isolate the DNA of known caribou parasites were unsuccessful…
