  • Search for Barents

    Open Access•Jaapjan J Zeeberg, Pieter M Floore et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2002

Three cairns on northernmost Novaya Zemlya identified as possible rock-pile graves by Russian investigators in 1977 and 1988 were located and inspected for human remains. These cairns are in the area visited by Dutch seafarers between 17 and 22 June 1597, after their wintering on Novaya Zemlya, and may contain the body of Willem Barents. Barents and one of his crewmen died on 20 June 1597 while the winterers were on landfast ice close to shore. P…

  • Manual preparation of ground sections for the microscopy of natural bone tissue

    Open Access•George J R Maat, Robert P M Van Den Bos et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2001•Citada por: 11•Referências: 5

Light microscopy should be a routine complementary diagnostic tool for osteoarchaeologists, palaeopathologists and forensic anthropologists. However, this well-established and long existing technique is not widely utilized. It is a popular belief that the preparation of the required sections of bone tissue demands a lot of time, expensive instruments, and a knowledge of plastics. To show that this is not entirely the case, a long existing techniq…

  • Avulsion injuries of vertebral endplates

    Open Access•George J R Maat, Rob W Mastwijk•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2000

Bone changes resulting from avulsions involving vertebral endplates have had little, if any, systematic attention in palaeopathological literature. To gain insight into their occurrence and into their variety, two archaeological skeletal collections covering the period AD 1455–1824 were examined. Additional skeletal material was used to illustrate typical examples. A quarter of the 44 adults who had adequate numbers of vertebrae at all spinal lev…

  • On the reliability of non-metrical morphological sex determination of the skull compared with that of the pelvis in The Low Countries

    Open Access•George J R Maat, Rob W Mastwijk et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1997

In order to study the suitability of the skull for sex determination, a sample of 202 adult human skeletons with pelves was analysed according to the recommendations of the Workshop of European Anthropologists (1980). The remains originated from citizens of the medieval city of Dordrecht in The Netherlands (AD 1275–1572). Sex was determined by means of non-metrical morphological sex-descriminant features of the skull (cranium plus mandible) and o…

  • Fusion status of the jugular growth plate

    Open Access•George J R Maat, Rob W Mastwijk•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1995•Citada por: 1•Referências: 3

To assess the feasibility of the fusion (synostosis) status of the jugular growth plate as an age at death indicator, a series of 98 skulls of documented age and sex from the so-called 'Utrecht collection' was examined. Ages at death in the series ranged from 14 to 92 years. Only specimens that could be inspected bilaterally were taken into account. According to the few but conflicting data from the literature, fusion happens at 16-18 years, or s…

  • Skeletal distribution of degenerative changes in vertebral osteophytosis, vertebral osteoarthritis and Dish

    Open Access•George J R Maat, Rob W Mastwijk et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1995•Citada por: 9•Referências: 18

In order to comprehend the condition of vertebral osteophytosis, vertebral osteoarthritis and DISH (diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis) with respect to diagnosis and aetiology, the vertebral and peripheral (appendicular) frequency and distribution pattern of degenerative joint changes of 176 rather affluent citizens were analysed from the late medieval city of Dordrecht in Holland. Patterns of frequencies with respect to age and sex were fo…

  • Bone preservation, decay and its related conditions in ancient human bones from Kuwait

    Open Access•George J R Maat•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1993•Citada por: 8•Referências: 10

By means of scanning electron microscopy, four out of a series of twelve inhumations from the Hellenistic Period were examined for traces of the decay process. The changes represented the result of erosion and biological decomposition of human bones on a small island in the northern part of the Persian Gulf over a period of ca. 2200 years. Special emphasis was given to bone preservation and blood cell survival, and to bone changes due to physicoc…

  • Ultrastructure of normal and pathological fossilized red blood cells compared with pseudopathological biological structures

    Open Access•George J R Maat•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1991•Citada por: 6•Referências: 3

Scanning electron microscopic examination of the bone marrow cavity of human skeletons dating from the Hellenistic Period in the Persian Gulf (330 to ca. 150 years BC) revealed the presence of fossilized blood cells. Owing to local conditions, the ultrastructure of the cells appeared to have been preserved very well. Consequently, a morphological comparison could be made between red blood cells of normal individuals and those of a man with poroti…

  • Dating and rating of Harris's lines

    Open Access•George J R Maat•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1984•Citada por: 15•Referências: 9

Well‐preserved skeletons of 50 Dutch whalers from the 17th and 18th centuries, buried on the island of Zeeusche Uytkyck, were excavated during the Spitsbergen Expedition 1980 A research program of the Arctic Center of the University of Groningen. In order to estimate the biological age of these skeletons at the time that Harris's lines were formed, a method which was developed from routine X‐ray data on tibial growth was tested. Formation ages of…
