The age of transition
"The period 1945-90 is analysed in terms of six main vectors: the interstate system, world production, the world labour force, world human welfare, the social cohesion of states, and the structures of knowledge. The book concludes with two global overviews: one for 1945-1990, and one assessing global possibilities, 1990-2025. It paints a picture of dark days ahead, but one in which there are real historical choices."--Page 4 of cover

World-Systems Analysis
The first volume in a new series from SAGE presenting work in the world-systems perspective, a school of social science thought that views the world economy as a single system across time and space. This first volume is a sourcebook reader of the most fundamental work in the field, drawn from Review, the journal most concerned with the work of this perspective, and from volumes in SAGE's Political Economy of the World-System Annuals
Processes of the World-System
Papers deal with three central issues in the study of the capitalist world economy: the long waves, cycles in the process of the international economy; the role class plays in peripheralization of countries; and an holistic view of the world economy
The Misery of Our Poor
CORES AND PERIPHERIES, metropoles and hinterlands, development and underdevelopment, and dependency are related themes which have become increasingly prominent in the socio-economic literature of the last decade or so. These concepts arise out of a variety of disciplines, ideologies, and schools and amount at present to an inchoate collection of disparate ideas which cries out for overview, some way of welding a potentially valuable series of app…

Third World Modernization in Transnational Perspective
Modernization" is the progressive organization of societies at the national level in the context of an evolving global network of such societies. This formulation raises a number of questions, for example: how we think about change at the individual level in relation to societal change; contrasts between "organic" and "technological" evolution (borrowing the terms from the biologist Wald); and the causal relevance of a society's position in inter…

V>JpposiTiON to oppression is coterminous with the existence of hierarchical social systems. Opposition is permanent, but for the most part latent. The oppressed are too weak politically, economically, and ideologically to manifest their opposition constantly. However, as we know, when oppression becomes particularly acute, or expectations particularly deceived, or the power of the ruling stratum falters, people have risen up in an almost spontan…
Commodity Chains in the World-Economy Prior to 1800
During the course of the last ten years the political economy of the world-system has emerged as a major field of inquiry within social science in general and within sociology in particular. At the heart of the development of this new field has been the documentation of the patterns of the capitalist worldeconomy, a historical system marked by a world-scale division of labor and phases of expansion and contraction. Although there are an increasin…
