  • The impact of positive work relationships on proactive behaviors

    Open Access•Jennifer B Farrell, Patrick C Flood et al.•ARTICLE•Applied Psychology•2025•Referências: 5

This paper proposes and then tests a cross‐level model pertaining to the intrapersonal and collective antecedents of work‐related proactive behaviors. The model posits individual‐level positive relational experiences and unit‐level relational coordination as social contextual antecedents of individual‐level proactive behaviors. The effects of these mechanisms are hypothesized to be mediated respectively by individual‐level role breadth self‐effic…

  • A Crossover Randomized Controlled Trial of Priming Interventions to Increase Hand Hygiene at Ward Entrances

Open Access•Kelly Ann Schmidtke, Navneet Aujla et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2022

BACKGROUND: Research conducted in the United States suggests that two primes (citrus smells and pictures of a person's eyes) can increase hand gel dispenser use on the day they are introduced in hospital. The current study, conducted at a hospital in the United Kingdom, evaluated the effectiveness of these primes, both in isolation and in combination, at the entry way to four separate wards, over a longer duration than the previous work. METHODS:…

  • Five‐Factor Model of Personality

Open Access•Gerard P Hodgkinson, Colin Mathew Hugues D Gill et al.•CHAPTER•Wiley Encyclopedia of Management•2015

The five‐factor model (FFM) underpinning the set of traits commonly known as ‘the Big Five’, is widely accepted as one of the foremost contributions to personality theory and research. The culmination of decades of research, founded on a wealth of biological, cross‐cultural, and psychometric evidence, it enjoys pre‐eminence in all of the major branches of human psychology. In the related fields of organizational behavior and personnel psychology,…

  • Psychological Foundations of Strategic Management

    Open Access•Mark P Healey, Gerard P Hodgkinson•CHAPTER•Wiley Encyclopedia of Management•2015

The psychology of strategic management draws inspiration from the behavioral sciences to understand why firms act in particular ways. This approach draws attention to how managers' mental processes influence strategic action. Rather than assuming that strategizing is objectively or even intendedly rational, a psychological approach holds that strategy formulation and implementation are always exercised within the bounds of human cognitive limitat…

Stimulated by the growing use of brain imaging and related neurophysiological techniques in psychology and economics, scholars have begun to debate the implications of neuroscience for management and organization studies (MOS). • The Politics of Evidence-Based Decision Making

    Gerard P Hodgkinson•CHAPTER•The Oxford handbook of…•2012

This chapter argues that evidence-based management is an inherently political project that risks creating an illusion of rationality, a multilayered façade masking underlying fundamental differences of interpretation, purpose, and power among the various stakeholders situated on both sides of the academic-practitioner/policy divide. To avoid this unfortunate scenario, it needs to accommodate on a more systematic basis the important influence of p…

The concept of intuition has, until recently, received scant scholarly attention within and beyond the psychological sciences, despite its potential to unify a number of lines of inquiry. Presently, the literature on intuition is conceptually underdeveloped and dispersed across a range of domains of application, from education, to management, to health. In this article, we clarify and distinguish intuition from related constructs, such as insight…

  • Conceptual note

The considerable volume of theory and research that has sought to illuminate the nature and significance of cognitive processes in strategy formulation and implementation represents but an important first step in the re-humanization of strategy research. In order to achieve the sorts of fine-grained analyses that will ultimately advance understanding of cognition in action, strategy researchers need to move beyond the static analysis of actors’ c…

In recent years, there has been a growth of interest in the study of business competition from a cognitive perspective. This paper reviews this rapidly expanding literature in order to synthesize key empirical findings and identify significant theoretical and methodological issues which warrant further investigation. It is argued that the notion of "competitive enactment" and the associated "cognitive life cycle" approach recently advanced by Por…
