  • It’s a Family Affair

Open Access•Cristina Cruz, Cristina Díaz de la Cruz et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Business Ethics•2024

Although most business-owning families (BOFs) that operate large family firms practice community social engagement both in private via family foundations and in the business domain via community corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs, the relationship between their activities in the two domains remains unclear. Prior literature speculates that BOFs will deprioritize firms’ community CSR when they have family foundations as more efficient …

  • Are Family Firms Really More Socially Responsible?

    Open Access•Cristina Cruz, Martin Larraza-Kintana et al.•ARTICLE•Entrepreneurship Theory and…•2014

This paper conducts an empirical study as to whether family firms are more socially responsible than their nonfamily counterparts and explores the conditions in which this difference in social behavior occurs. We argue that family firms, given their socioemotional wealth bias, have a positive effect on social dimensions linked to external stakeholders, yet have a negative impact on internal social dimensions. Thus, family firms can be socially re…

  • Temporary Contracts and Work-Family Balance in a Dual Labor Market

Open Access•Rocio Bonet, Cristina Cruz et al.•ARTICLE•Industrial and Labor Relations…•2013•Citada por: 2•Referências: 47

A well-established finding in the literature is that self-employment enables mothers to accommodate work and family needs better than when they are engaged in organizational employment. With this result in mind, the authors investigate within a dual system of job protection if women under temporary contracts face greater work-family conflicts than those under permanent contracts. The authors use data on women's work and fertility histories from t…

  • Socioemotional Wealth in Family Firms

Open Access•Pascual Berrone, Cristina Cruz et al.•ARTICLE•Family Business Review•2012

This article makes the case for the socioemotional wealth (SEW) approach as the potential dominant paradigm in the family business field. The authors argue that SEW is the most important differentiator of the family firm as a unique entity and, as such, helps explain why family firms behave distinctively. In doing so, the authors review the concept of SEW, its different dimensions, and its links with other theoretical approaches. The authors also…

  • Socioemotional Wealth and Proactive Stakeholder Engagement

Open Access•Carmelo Cennamo, Pascual Berrone et al.•ARTICLE•Entrepreneurship Theory and…•2012

While family business research has prominently recognized that family firms are motivated by nonfinancial factors, the literature has remained relatively silent about whether or not these firms are more likely than others to engage actively with their stakeholders, who often have nonpecuniary demands. This paper argues that family firms are more prone to adopt proactive stakeholder engagement (PSE) activities because by doing so they preserve and…
