  • Crisis in the Professions

Kevin T Leicht, Mary Fennell et al.•BOOK•Crisis in the Professions•2023

Crisis in the Professions: The New Dark Age presents a wide, panoramic view into the state of modern professional work in the United States. Struggling labor markets, growing inequalities, and increasing amounts of cultural and political mistrust are but a few major changes undermining the people seen as essential in society and needed to compete in a globalized, highly skilled world. The authors explore this profound dilemma through a variety of…

  • U.S. Health-Care Organizations

    Mary L Fennell, Crystal M Adams et al.•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Sociology•2011•Citada por: 2•Referências: 66

The focus of this review is macro-level organizational change in U.S. health-care organizations, with a special emphasis on turbulent changes in the environments of health-care organizations. We examine several contemporary theories used to study health-care organizations (institutional theory, complexity theory, and multilevel approaches). These and other theories may be helpful in framing investigations that emphasize key environmental changes …

  • Who staffs the US leaning tower? Organisational change and diversity

    Kevin T Leicht, Mary L Fennell et al.•ARTICLE•Equal Opportunities International•2008•Citada por: 4•Referências: 7

Purpose The paper aims to argue that US colleges and universities resemble a “leaning tower” with ever expanding layers of administrators and managers who control and dominate university life. This set of institutional changes has altered the way that college administrators are recruited. Design/methodology/approach The paper uses recent developments in institutional theories of organisations to explain the changing environment facing US colleges…

  • Separate And Unequal

DAVID BARTON SMITH, Zhanlian Feng et al.•ARTICLE•Health Affairs•2007

We describe the racial segregation in U.S. nursing homes and its relationship to racial disparities in the quality of care. Nursing homes remain relatively segregated, roughly mirroring the residential segregation within metropolitan areas. As a result, blacks are much more likely than whites to be located in nursing homes that have serious deficiencies, lower staffing ratios, and greater financial vulnerability. Changing health care providers' b…

  • The Regulatory Environment and Rural Hospital Long‐Term Care Strategies From 1997 to 2003

Open Access•Mary L Fennell, Susan Campbell et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Rural Health•2007

Context: Since the passage of the Balanced Budget Act of 1997, rural hospitals have struggled with the need to strategically adapt to an abundance of changing reimbursement and regulatory programs, as well as to respond to the needs of an increasingly frail elder population in need of postacute and long‐term care (LTC). Purpose: This article has 2 goals: (1) to provide a summary of the many legislative acts and provisions influencing rural hospit…

    Linda Laliberte, Mary L Fennell et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2005•Referências: 22

BACKGROUND: Research has shown that older women with breast cancer are less likely than younger women to receive treatment in accordance with accepted guidelines. Cancer-related research networks (eg, Comprehensive Cancer Centers) have been funded by the National Cancer Institute to increase the dissemination of new treatment strategies, but little is known about their relationship to cancer treatment patterns. OBJECTIVES: We used a 3-level hiera…

  • The Changing Organizational Context of Professional Work

    Kevin T Leicht, Mary L Fennell•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Sociology•1997•Citada por: 67•Referências: 54

Our paper represents an attempt to stimulate continued sociological interest in professional work. Our review suggests that understanding professional work is central to understanding larger workplace changes in the late twentieth century. Some researchers have documented the increasingly diverse arrangements for the delivery of professional services, even as others point to a convergence of professional control around accountability and cost con…

  • Through the Lenses of Organizational Sociology

Ann Barry Flood, Mary L Fennell•ARTICLE•Journal of Health and Social…•1995•Citada por: 8

This paper reviews various theoretical perspectives on organizational change which have been and could be applied to medical organizations. These perspectives are discussed as both filters influencing our observations (research) and mirrors of the shifting dynamics of delivery system reform (policy). We conclude with an examination of how such theories can provide useful insights into our rapidly changing health care system

  • Multihospital System Affiliation as a Survival Strategy for Rural Hospitals Under the Prospective Payment System

Open Access•Michael T Halpern, Jeffrey A Alexander et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Rural Health•1992

The introduction of Medicare's Prospective Payment System (PPS) has disproportionately increased financial pressures on rural hospitals and posed challenges to the survival of these institutions. Increasingly, rural hospitals are seeking strategies that can enhance their chances for survival in a turbulent and hostile environment. This study examined the survival effects of one such strategy, multihospital system affiliation. Specifically, we ass…

    Mary L Fennell, Richard M Wei et al.•ARTICLE•Contemporary Sociology A Journal…•1988

Weiss examines the disease model of alcoholism and how bureaucratically rigid organizations use it to justify their control of employee behavior. He looks at the relations among control programs encountered by management and their inclination to have an alcoholism program based on this disease model. The results of his research suggest that those companies faced with greater control problems tend to have a more bureaucratic organizational structu…

  • A Multivariate Model of Job Stress and Alcohol Consumption

    Open Access•Michael M Harris, Mary L Fennell•ARTICLE•Sociological Quarterly•1988•Citada por: 3•Referências: 11

Although a significant relationship between job stress and alcohol consumption would seem quite logical, it has in fact received limited empirical support. A multi-variate model is developed in this article, in which the relationship between job stress and alcohol consumption is assumed to be mediated by beliefs regarding the efficacy of alcohol to relieve stress. Considerable support for this model is demonstrated, and the implications for pract…

Although previous research has shown that the structure of groups or clusters of hospitals depends upon environmental characteristics of local service areas, little work has been done to demonstrate the importance of specifying the appropriate environmental framework for hospital clusters of varying composition. Clusters composed of only community general hospitals are affected primarily by the characteristics of the local community or service ar…
