Reading Black Childhoods in Chains and Crongton Knights
This essay reads Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson (2008) and Crongton Knights by Alex Wheatle (2016) as texts in the young adult (YA) genre that provocatively render black childhood legible. It contends that Anderson and Wheatle destabilise the presumed authority of first-person narratives through the formal choices that structure their novels. Conceptualising ‘success’ among Imprisonment for Public Protection (IPP) sentenced offenders with personality-related difficulties
This paper explores conceptualisations of ‘ success’ by men on Imprisonment for Public Protection (IPP) sentence licence screened into the Offender Personality Disorder Pathway. ‘ Success’ was defined as a process of having ‘ survived’ the perceived injustices associated with the IPP sentence. In this essay I apply theories of intersectionality to A Pickpocket’s Tale (2006), a young adult novel which imagines eighteenth-century Britishness, indenture, slavery, and Jewishness. I argue that this is a text which represents feminist resistance and its limits as located within the shared social and physical spaces of Jewishness and blackness. There are many facets of feminist creolisation within Zadie Smith's novel On Beauty (2005). This article locates and analyses the novel's feminist subtext by assessing the characterisations of black women and Smith's use of Vodou symbolism in the form of the goddess Erzulie. The argument is made that Smith's black women, imbued with aspects of Erzulie's diverse personae, defy their marginal positions in the narrative and become its driving force.…
