Patterns of skeletal trauma resulting from motor vehicle collisions
As a leading cause of fatality, motor vehicle collisions comprise a significant proportion of medico-legal cases worldwide. During death investigations into such events, forensic practitioners may be asked to make inferences about the relationship between traumatic injuries and the circumstances of the collision. These interpretations require a thorough understanding of the hard and soft tissue blunt force trauma that results from vehicle collisi…
Moving from the unknown to the known
Human skeletal remains were recovered from Sandy Point, Victoria. The absence of circumstantial information and the poor preservation (i.e. skeletonized) of the remains precluded the formation of an identification hypothesis, rendering the identification process complex.Only through the integration of anthropology, odontology, molecular biology, radiocarbon dating, historical research, and genealogy were the remains able to be identified as Mr. Ch…

The Dead as Ancestors, Martyrs, and Heroes in Timor-Leste
During the 24-year Indonesian occupation of East Timor, thousands of people died, or were killed, in circumstances that did not allow the required death rituals to be performed. Since the nation's independence, families and communities have invested considerable time, effort and resources in fulfilling their obligations to the dead. These obligations are imbued with urgency because the dead are ascribed agency and can play a benevolent or malevol…
The role of forensic anthropology in disaster victim identification (DVI)
Forensic anthropological knowledge has been used in disaster victim identification (DVI) for over a century, but over the past decades, there have been a number of disaster events which have seen an increasing role for the forensic anthropologist. The experiences gained from some of the latest DVI operations have provided valuable lessons that have had an effect on the role and perceived value of the forensic anthropologist as part of the team ma…

Archaeology
Archaeology comes from the Greek term arkhaiologia meaning “the study of ancient things” and is defined as the study of past peoples and culture. Archaeologists develop interpretations about the past through the recovery and analysis of material culture (which may include graves, monuments, buildings, inscriptions, tools, pottery, etc.) and associated evidence (such as pollen, charcoal, residues, skeletal remains, etc.). In order to provide inter…

Dying for independence
While there have been numerous violent events in Timor Leste the one act that holds significant political and social meaning for the local population is a massacre that occurred in Dili on the 12 November 1991 at the Santa Cruz cemetery. Following a brief summary of the mechanisms in place to investigate human rights abuses in Timor Leste, this paper focuses on efforts to investigate the Santa Cruz massacre. While the number of people killed in o…

AMS Radiocarbon Dates of Kurgans Located On the Ust'-Yurt Plateau, Uzbekistan
Recent osteological analyses of archaeological human skeletal remains from the Ust'-Yurt Plateau, Uzbekistan, provided the opportunity to obtain samples for radiocarbon dating. The results of 18 accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) dates are presented in this paper and provide the first absolute dates for late prehistoric and early historic archaeological sites in Uzbekistan. The AMS dates suggest that most sites are earlier than have been traditi…
Osteoarchaeological evidence for leprosy from western Central Asia
Published reports of palaeopathological analyses of skeletal collections from Central Asia are, to date, scarce. During the macroscopic examination of skeletal remains dating to the early first millennium AD from the Ustyurt Plateau, Uzbekistan, diagnostic features suggestive of leprosy were found on one individual from Devkesken 6. This adult female exhibited rhinomaxillary changes indicative of leprosy: resorption of the anterior nasal spine, r…
Fragmentary endings
This paper reviews the architectural and human skeletal remains from Umm an-Nar period tombs ( c . 2500–2000 BC), found across the Oman Peninsula. Possible meanings for the regional dispersal of the tombs across the region are considered. Tomb Unar 2 may provide possible interpretations of 3rd-millennium BC burial practices

While syntheses of palaeopathological studies have been undertaken in many parts of the world, until recently little was known about human health in the past in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Focusing on skeletal pathologies, this paper documents the results of the first synthetic palaeopathologlcal study for this country. The collections of archaeological human skeletal remains come from three sites dating to the third and two sites dating to t…

Seeing through the Dunes
Geophysical techniques have been developed and used in the investigation of archaeological sites predominantly in temperate climates in northern Europe and North America; relatively little geophysical work has been undertaken on sites in arid environments. This article presents a magnetometry survey of the Iron Age (ca. 1300–300 B.C.) site of Muweilah, United Arab Emirates and examines the problems specific to geophysical investigations in arid e…
