This account begins by revisiting some of the organizing constructs, policies, and worldviews shaped by China’s national policy of kaifang 开放 (opening) intercut with anecdotes and memories from the author’s yearlong fieldwork in a Miao community in Guizhou Province in 1988. This chapter aims to offer an analysis of powered “relational” and gendered place making and constructions of nativeness among the Hmong/Miao through the lens of their burgeoning media practices.
