During the Proto-Elamite period, 3300-2800 B.C., a political and economic hegemony seems to have arisen in the southwestern highlands of Iran. The power of this hegemony was derived from its control over the major trade routes between the Iranian plateau and Mesopotamia; its extent is defined by shared styles in ceramics, art, and architecture and by the use of a distincitive system of writing and recording. Evolutionary Epistemology and Human Values [and Comments and Reply]
The theory of evolution is a body of concepts and relations that applies to social and cultural phenomena as well as to biological ones. The fundamental ideas of the theory-taxonomy, developmental relations, processes of change, and directionality-are shown to apply to human society and culture. Rank-Size Convexity and System Integration
Settlement rank-size distributions are shown to vary from primate through lognormal to convex. Archaeological and historical data are used to suggest that rank-size convexity can be attributed to low system integration. Both convex and primate distributions are discussed in terms of scale and boundary problems, and a statistical definition of system integration is used to suggest a process for the development of log-normal distributions

Population, Exchange, and Early State Formation in Southwestern Iran
Several widely discussed single-variable explanations of the origin of the state are tested using data from Southwestern Iran. These data demonstrate that increasing population or increasing inter-regional trade alone cannot explain the appearance of specialized governments during the fourth millennium B.C. More complex types of explanation are suggested, and methods for testing them are outlined
