Duo-ethnographic Methods
Duo-ethnography is a collaborative methodology in which participants juxtapose their experiences around a topic to parse multiple perspectives. It explicitly positions ethnographers as sources of information, not data collectors. A few years ago, I was trying to find a contemporary function for the patuas ’ skill bank. The patuas of West Bengal are unique multimedia artists who paint narrative scrolls accompanied by sung poetry. Many of the patuas (pronounced poh-to-ah) live in Naya, a small village about 150 kilometers from Kolkata, India. As a folk arts curator based in Kolkata, I had a long working relationship with them, but in the year 2000 I could see signs that the…
