  • Reflections on Theory in Action Transformational Public Service Revisited

    Lisa A Zanetti, Cheryl Simrell King•ARTICLE•Administrative Theory & Praxis•2013•Citada por: 4•Referências: 4

This article revisits the thesis of our 2005 book Transformational Public Service and responds to the question of what it takes to change the discipline by applying Emile Durkheim's notion of "collective effervescence" through means of empathy and transformational practices of institutions. We can enlarge the field of public administration to overcome its continued fixation on a narrowly managerial approach and find new ways to transform an other…

  • Repositioning the Ethical Imperative

    Open Access•Lisa A Zanetti•ARTICLE•The American Review of Public…•2004•Citada por: 1•Referências: 18

This article explores the dimensions of an ethical framework for administrators based on the philosophical premises of critical theory. The goal of critical theory is to view the world dialectically and have a practical intent-to participate in revealing the socially constructed nature of the world, to help affirm that reified social constructs are not immutable, and then to work to transform society as the expression of an emancipatory vision. A…

  • Holding Contradictions

    Lisa A Zanetti•ARTICLE•Administrative Theory & Praxis•2003•Citada por: 1•Referências: 5

In this paper, the author considers the implications of refusal in the context of dialectic and depth psychology. What does it mean to refuse? What are the personal and psychological costs of refusal? Marcuse suggested that refusal could lead to greater possibilities for action. The author suggests that those in the field of public administration can participate in the “Great Refusal” by learning to think more dialectically, thus disabling the We…

  • In Service of the Leviathan

    Lisa A Zanetti, Guy B Adams•ARTICLE•Administrative Theory & Praxis•2000•Citada por: 7•Referências: 20

In this paper, we argue that the practice of New Public Management (NPM) subverts democracy by undermining the social contract and substituting a market mentality with very different normative expectations. Like late modern Hobbesians, those who advocate NPM offer a vision of public service in which democratic politics and ethics become increasingly irrelevant. In this scenario, the market becomes the new leviathan, which we have no choice but to…

  • Contemporary Pragmatism in Public Administration

    Open Access•Lisa A Zanetti, Adrian Carr•ARTICLE•Administration & Society•2000•Citada por: 3•Referências: 16

In this article, the authors present some of the limitations of contemporary pragmatism. Although the authors are sympathetic in many respects to the community-building aspirations of pragmatism, they also contend that in certain important respects—specifically with regard to process, experience, and imagination—contemporary pragmatism leaves some troubling gaps that limit or undermine its ability to address what they argue are important contempo…

  • The Emergence of a Surrealist Movement and its Vital `Estrangement-Effect' in Organization Studies

    Open Access•Adrian Carr, Adrian N Carr et al.•ARTICLE•Human Relations•2000•Citada por: 2•Referências: 19

Beginning as a subversive and anti-establishment movement in France in the 1920s, surrealism was primarily a movement whose `voice' came through the written word. Later the movement extended into the visual arts, with which it is more generally associated. Surrealism was always intended as a way of thinking, a way of feeling and, indeed, a philosophy of life. This way of thinking now appears to have permeated the discourse of organization theory …

  • The Uninsured in the Context of an Experimental Approach to Health Care Reform

  • Exaggerating the Dialectic

    Lisa A Zanetti, Adrian Carr•ARTICLE•Administrative Theory & Praxis•1999•Citada por: 5•Referências: 13

The notion of citizenship is an ancient concept of belonging to a particular community. In this paper we argue that postmodernism undermines the notion of citizenship in two primary ways. First, because postmodernism represents a social condition reflecting the crises of late capitalism, citizenship is undermined through reliance on market mechanisms. Citizenship is commodified; citizens become “consumers” and no longer feel any sense of obligati…

  • Metatheorizing the Dialectic of Self and Other

    Open Access•Adrian Carr, Lisa A Zanetti•ARTICLE•American Behavioral Scientist•1999•Citada por: 4•Referências: 26

Western thought is imbued with thinking based on dichotomy and binary opposition. Embedded in this thinking, however, are not only oppositions but hierarchy. The existence of binaries suggests a struggle for predominance. One proposition must prevail, and the other must be vanquished. The fields of organization behavior and administrative theory reflect this form of rationality. The terms self and other have been cast as constituent elements of t…

  • Advancing Praxis

    Open Access•Lisa A Zanetti•ARTICLE•The American Review of Public…•1997•Citada por: 20•Referências: 20

This article addresses the current condition of critical theory in public administration. Despite 15 years of consideration in the field, critical approaches remain marginal. The author argues that there are several reasons for this failure to progress. Philosophically, critical theory in public administration has overemphasized its discourse-theoretical component at the expense of practical research and action, a situation that renders praxis un…
