  • Self-Determination and Women's Rights in Muslim Societies

    Chitra Raghavan, James P Levine•BOOK•Self-determination and women's…•2012

Contradicting the views commonly held by westerners, many Muslim countries in fact engage in a wide spectrum of reform, with the status of women as a central dimension. This anthology counters the myth that Islam and feminism are always or necessarily in opposition. A multidisciplinary group of scholars examine ideology, practice, and reform efforts in the areas of marriage, divorce, abortion, violence against women, inheritance, and female circu…

A critique is offered of’ the methodology of the criminal victimization survey and several sources of error that may result in artificially inflated crime rates based on such data are identified. It is argued that much information about crimes given by respondents may be incorrect due to misunderstandings about what transpired, ignorance about legal definitions, memory failures about when crimes occurred, and outright prefabrication. Organization…

  • "The Impact of "Gideon

    James P Levine•ARTICLE•Polity•1975•Citada por: 4

Has the assurance of a lawyer for criminal defendants really mattered? Is not the sophisticated response that legal aid lawyers have neither the experience nor the time and resources and commitment to give meaningful help to their clients? Professor Levine reports a study comparing the performance of private criminal lawyers and Legal Aid Society lawyers in Brooklyn, New York, notes various earlier findings, and proposes certain actions to make t…

    Open Access•James P Levine•ARTICLE•Law & Society Review•1971•Citada por: 6•Referências: 12

One serious obstacle to the achievement of social change in America has been the intransigence of large bureaucracies toward changes in goals, procedures, and styles. Although programs ad infinitum to remedy evils such as poverty, segregation, crime, and pollution are proposed and even written into law, the day-to-day operation of our political institutions often fails to reflect these innovations. Thus we are unable to evaluate the merits of alt…

  • Methodological Concerns in Studying Supreme Court Efficacy

    Open Access•James P Levine•ARTICLE•Law & Society Review•1970•Citada por: 11•Referências: 22

Only a few years agoit was customary and appropriate to begin an essay on Supreme Court efficacy by lamenting the paucity of empirical studies dealing with this problem. Such an introduction is no longer in order, since we have recently witnessed a flourishing of research on the actual consequences of judicial decisions. Both the appearance of at least one book of readings on Supreme Court impact (Becker, 1969) and the focusing of panels around t…
