  • Manx Crosses

    David M Wilson•BOOK•Manx Crosses•2018

This is the first general survey of the carved stone crosses of the Isle of Man (late 5th to mid-11th century) for more than a century, providing a new view of the political and religious connections of the Isle of Man in a period of great turmoil in the Irish Sea region. The book also includes an up-to-date annotated inventory of the monuments

  • A Hungarian in London

    David M Wilson•ARTICLE•Journal of the History of…•2010

Ferenc Pulszky was a Hungarian politician, revolutionary, lawyer, collector, archaeologist and national-museum director. During his exile in London, 1849-60, he became well known in political, social and intellectual circles. During this period (in 1851) he gave a lecture – the subject of this paper – which is full of remarkably forward-looking judgements and proposals concerning museum display and education.

  • The Irish Sea and the Atlantic trade in the Viking Age

    David M Wilson•ARTICLE•European Review•2000

The Vikings initially ventured into the Irish Sea as raiders and took, from the monasteries and other rich centres, wealth in the form of goods and slaves. In the course of the tenth century, however, they became permanently established and founded and developed the first towns in Ireland, often under sufferance from the local population. From these towns they controlled the trade routes along the western coasts of Europe through the Irish Sea — …

  • National museums and international museums

    Open Access•David M Wilson•ARTICLE•European Review•1993

At a time when nationalism grows more strident, the role of national museums assumes great importance. National museums encourage not only an understanding of national identity, but also patriotism. While this is natural, it has dangers in that the museum can be used politically to endorse racial and other charged emotions. The great international museums have provided an antidote to such tendencies by providing a universal view of the culture an…

    Open Access•David M Wilson•ARTICLE•Transactions of the Royal…•1976•Citada por: 2•Referências: 4

THE Scandinavians came to Britain first as raiders, then as settlers. The length of the periods of raiding, the form of raids, the character and duration of settlement and the speed with which Scandinavian influence was lost, varied considerably in the different regions. In simple terms the Viking Age lasted from 790 to 1070, but within and beyond these dates is infinite variety. In England the first settlements are not recorded before 876, eight…

  • III.— The Trewhiddle Hoard

    Open Access•David M Wilson, C E Blunt•ARTICLE•Archaeologia•1961•Citada por: 5•Referências: 5

The hoard, one of the most important finds of metal work and coins of the Christian Saxon period, was discovered in 1774 by tin-workers in a streamwork, 17 feet under the surface of the ground, at Trewhiddle, St. Austell, Cornwall. It was hidden in a heap of loose stones which Philip Rashleigh in his original publication ascribes to an old mine working. The collection of the hoard was haphazard and it seems likely that a certain number of coins, …

    Open Access•David M Wilson•ARTICLE•The Antiquaries Journal•1961•Citada por: 1•Referências: 5

This paper is intended to examine in detail certain problems concerning the binding of the Victor Codex (MS. Bonifatianus I)in the Landesbibliothek at Fulda (pl. xxxv). It is hoped to show that the metal mounts of the binding are of Northumbrian manufacture; that, in all probability, the leather binding was executed at the same time and in the same area, and that the binding is of late-seventh or eighth-century date
