Association between the skeletal muscle-to-visceral fat area ratio and liver fibrosis risk in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
Background Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is highly prevalent and closely linked to metabolic dysfunction, with progressive liver fibrosis driving adverse outcomes. Conventional obesity metrics such as body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference inadequately capture body-composition imbalance. The skeletal muscle-to-visceral fat area ratio (SVR) integrates muscle reserve and visceral adiposity and may better reflect metabolic risk. H…
Board Networks and Corporate Carbon Emissions
This study examines whether board networks influence corporate carbon emissions and the strategic pathways through which firms decarbonize. Using a sample of 1952 firms across 48 countries from 2003 to 2020, we employ dynamic stacked regressions that exploit exogenous carbon‐regulation shocks affecting firms connected through shared third‐party board memberships. We find that focal firms reduce absolute emissions by about 9%. The effect concentra…

Narrative as Practical Pedagogy
Prevailing moral education theory, shaped by universalist and cognitive paradigms, often fails to connect abstract principles with lived experience, fragmenting the moral self. This paper argues that China’s Four Great Classic Novels form a rich repository of culturallygrounded phronesis (practical wisdom). We propose an analytical framework structured around the Chinese sequence of “lixin, lishen, liye, liming” and elaborated through four dimens…

Why insurgents engage in kidnappings
Despite the common perception viewing kidnappings as means to generate ransom income and to obtain political concessions, it remains unclear why kidnappings are disproportionately employed by some violent insurgent groups but not by the others. Combining data from the Global Terrorism Database and the Big Allied and Dangerous Insurgency Dataset, we empirically examined this question with a theoretical focus on the possible role of insurgents' per…
Is "Animal Welfare" a Foreign Notion to China
While Chinese culture has long emphasized "Tian ren he yi" (the oneness of nature and humanity), promoting animal welfare in China remains a challenge. This article suggests that the widespread view of "animal welfare" as an inherently foreign concept plays a significant role in this difficulty, as it implies that Western notions of animal welfare are irrelevant to Chinese society and thus may not warrant serious consideration. We argue that alth…
Mapping barriers to food, energy, and water systems equity in the United States
Barriers to affordable, accessible, high-quality food, energy, and water systems (FEWS) harm social equity. Connections within and across FEWS suggest that co-occurring barriers to equity can compound vulnerability. We hypothesized that barriers to FEW resources are strongly associated with geographic location, both within and across FEWS, as they rely heavily on localized sociopolitical and natural environments. This study explored the geographi…

聋人阅读中的副中央凹视觉注意增强效应——来自消失文本的证据
Visual information is essential to deaf people given their early auditory deprivation. Some researchers have proposed a perspective in which the distribution of deaf visual attention resource shifted from the central to the extrafoveal visual field. This study explores how this unique visual processing ability may influence reading in deaf people and proposes ‘the effect of parafoveal visual attention enhancement in deaf reading.’ We hypothesise …
Quantifying the potential for reservoirs to secure future surface water yields in the world’s largest river basins
Surface water reservoirs provide us with reliable water supply, hydropower generation, flood control and recreation services. Yet, reservoirs also cause flow fragmentation in rivers and lead to flooding of upstream areas, thereby displacing existing land-use activities and ecosystems. Anticipated population growth and development coupled with climate change in many regions of the globe suggests a critical need to assess the potential for future r…
