  • Family configuration and family size

    C Thomas Gualtieri, Robert E Hicks•ARTICLE•Biodemography and Social Biology•1986•Referências: 7

In a sample of 61,829 families, the probability of having an additional child is higher in those families with all children of the same sex as compared to those families with children of both sexes. In addition, families with only boys were more likely to have an additional child than families with all girls

  • Response Process in Judgmental Contrast

Robert E Hicks, Marcel Kinsbourne et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1985•Referências: 1

College students ranked opposite-sex and same-sex celebrities on their attractiveness as potential partners for an evening (dateability) in Experiment 1 (n = 130). The opposite-sex rankings were used to establish three stimulus contexts varying in average dateability for each sex. Subjects then gave two types of magnitude estimations (line drawings and dollars) on the dateability of common stimulus names in the three contexts (Experiment 2, n = 1…

  • The Locus of Bimanual Skill Transfer

Robert E Hicks, Jay Martin Frank et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1982•Referências: 1

Subjects (N = 128) practiced a typing task with one hand while the other hand either grasped the table leg (experimental condition) or was free (control condition). Subsequently, the other hand showed savings in training in the control but not in the experimental condition. The abolition of transfer of training by engaging the fingers of the test hand in unrelated activity during training suggests that transfer is mediated by irradiation of the e…

  • Judgments of Semantic Stimuli as a Function of Context

Denise Cortis Park, Robert E Hicks•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1980•Citada por: 1

It has been reported that contextual stimulation affects judgment of a stimulus ensemble when the judgmental language is relative, categorical, and/or arbitrary. The current study explored the effect of context on judgments of semantic stimuli. College students, 65 male and 80 female, gave magnitude estimations of expressions of amount, expressions of probability, size of noun referents, and enactive imagery value of verbs in Experiments 1 throug…

  • Lateral Asymmetry of Retroactive Inhibition in a Psychomotor Skill

    Robert E Hicks•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1975

Right-handed college students (N equals 160) received 10 practice trials on inverted-reversed printing with either the left or right hand followed by 10 additional trials with either the same or the other hand. Half the Ss then received 10 interpolated learning trials of inverted-but-nonreversed printing, while the other half of the Ss worked arithmetic problems. Significant retroactive inhibition occurred for Ss printing with the right hand, but…

  • Input and Output Variables in the Recall of Categorized and Uncategorized Lists

    Robert E Hicks, Robert K Young•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1973•Citada por: 1

A list of 25 nouns containing five sets of five words each beginning with a different initial letter was presented for five learning trials. The words were presented either randomly or were blockd on the basis of the initial letter. For half the Ss, the list contained five categories of five words each. For the second half of the Ss the words were unrelated. Recall was either free or cued. Categorized lists were recalled better than uncategorized…

  • Forgetting of Acquisition and Extinction in an Invertebrate

Robert E Hicks, James W McDaniel et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1973

Two experiments with isopods, Armadillidium vulgare, were reported. In Experiment I, two groups of five Ss each learned to run a T maze to escape light and heat. Both original learning (OL), and relearning (RL) the next day, were to a criterion 9/10 correct. Between OL and RL one group was immobilized (I), and the other group was given the opportunity for activity (A). The I treatment resulted in greater savings on RL than did the A treatment, an…
