Barriers to and Facilitators of Paternal Engagement for Black Fathers in Fulton County, Georgia
The current study explores the experiences of nonresidential fathers and the potential barriers to engagement with their children. Using a phenomenological approach, we explored issues of perceived parenting supports, co-parenting, and self-efficacy, and how these might impact fathering behaviors and attitudes. We conducted semi-structured interviews and focus groups with 12 self-identified Black fathers in Fulton County Georgia. The results indi…

Understanding Treatment Disconnect and Mortality Trends in Renal Cell Carcinoma Using Tumor Registry Data
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The paradoxical rise in overall and cancer-specific mortality despite increased detection and treatment of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is termed "treatment disconnect." We reassess this phenomenon by evaluating impact of missing data and rising incidence on mortality trends. RESEARCH DESIGN, SUBJECTS, AND MEASURES: Using Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results data, we identified patients with RCC diagnosis from 1973…

Identifying Better Practices for Early-stage Bladder Cancer
BACKGROUND: Practice guidelines for nonmuscle invasive (ie, early stage) bladder cancer are ambiguous, resulting in substantial practice variation without a clear patient benefit. OBJECTIVES: To profile urologist practice styles and empirically derive better patterns of use for common bladder cancer services. RESEARCH DESIGN: Retrospective cohort. SUBJECTS: Elderly patients diagnosed with early-stage bladder cancer between January 1, 1992 and Dec…
Specialty Care and the Patient-Centered Medical Home
BACKGROUND: The medical home's success depends, in part, on the degree to which primary care physicians (PCPs) and specialists collaborate to create "medical neighborhoods" based on collective accountability. Such collaboration may require a new equilibrium in chronic disease care, with some of the routine follow-up currently provided by specialists reallocated to PCPs and their medical home teams. OBJECTIVES: To measure the care delivered by spe…
Hospital Characteristics and Use of Innovative Surgical Therapies Among Patients With Kidney Cancer
BACKGROUND: Despite their potential benefits to patients, the adoption of partial nephrectomy and laparoscopic kidney cancer surgery has been both gradual and concentrated in select hospitals. OBJECTIVE: We assessed the degree to which adjusting for hospital structural characteristics modifies the association between hospital nephrectomy volume and patient receipt of partial nephrectomy and/or laparoscopic kidney cancer surgery. RESEARCH DESIGN A…
Treatment Choice and Quality of Care for Men With Localized Prostate Cancer
BACKGROUND: Variations in patterns of care and treatment outcomes suggest differences in the quality of care for men treated for localized prostate cancer. OBJECTIVE: We sought to compare adherence with quality indicators for prostate cancer care among men treated with radical prostatectomy or external beam radiation therapy. RESEARCH DESIGN AND SUBJECTS: We sampled 5230 men diagnosed in 2000 or 2001 with early-stage prostate cancer from 984 faci…

Gender differences in risk taking: A meta-analysis
The authors conducted a meta-analysis of 150 studies in which the risk-taking tendencies of male and female participants were compared. Studies were coded with respect to type of task (e.g., self-reported behaviors vs. observed behaviors), task content (e.g., smoking vs. sex), and 5 age levels. Results showed that the average effects for 14 out of 16 types of risk taking were significantly larger than 0 (indicating greater risk taking in male par…

The role of contextual and personal factors in children's risk taking
The primary aims of the present studies were to (a) add to the sparse developmental database on risk taking and (b) conduct initial tests of a self-regulation model (SRM) of risk taking. According to the SRM, inappropriate risk taking is associated with overconfidence, falling prey to dysregulating influences (e.g., impulsivity, peer presence, etc.), and an insensitivity to outcomes. Experiment 1 tested these proposals by assessing the effects of…

Self-Report Measures of Anxiety: A Cross-Cultural Investigation of Bias
The Education for All Handicapped Acts of 1975 (Public Law 94-142) mandates that psychoeducational assessment instruments be validated in their use in identifying exceptional children who are in need of special services. However, the gap between the mandate of PL 94-142 and the current technology of psycho-ed-ucational assessment is often large. This is particularly true in regard to assessing emotional difficulties of culturally diverse children…

The Identification of Visible, Concealed, and Symbolic Leaders in a Small Indiana City: A Replication of the Bonjean-Noland Study of Burlington, North Carolina
The method used by Bonjean and Noland in the identification of visible, concealed, and symbolic leaders in Burlington, North Carolina, is replicated in a study of a small Indiana city. The results confirm the usefulness of the method. In the replication the technique succeeds remarkably well in identifying the three types of leaders. It also reveals patterned differences between the three categories of leaders in the two cities
Health Care Organizations in Third and Fourth World Nations
EALTH CARE ORGANIZATIONS should try to meet priority health needs, in third and fourth world nations as well as in industrialized nations, as effectively as possible and by fully utilizing all resources that are available. This assertion seems quite obviously to be valid, and most authorities would accept it as an ideal to be aimed for. But they would tend to lose themselves in endless arguments about which health needs should be given highest pr…
