  • Do Initial Neighborhood Characteristics Impact Future Residential Integration of Refugees? Quasi-experimental Evidence from a Swedish Placement Policy

Open Access•Matz Dahlberg, Sebastian Kohl et al.•ARTICLE•European Sociological Review•2026

Sweden has recorded the highest number of refugees per capita in Europe in recent decades, while its major cities maintain high levels of ethnic segregation. This paper investigates the long-term impact of refugees’ initial neighborhood placement on long-term neighborhood integration. Using full population register data since 1990, the paper applies a fine-grained k-nearest-neighbor approach and accounts for refugee's potential self-selection int…

  • What is in a label? On neighborhood labeling, stigma and housing prices

Open Access•Henrik Andersson, Ina Blind et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Science and Urban…•2026

Place-based policies that allocate resources to specific areas inadvertently also designate these areas as needing assistance, potentially leading to the development of neighborhood stigma. The common coupling of resource allocation and area designation makes it difficult to measure the stigma effect. However, the Swedish police’s listing of “vulnerable” neighborhoods, initially introduced in 2015, lacked accompanying resources, offering a unique…

  • Urban segregation and economic inequality in Sweden (1991–2017)

Open Access•Matz Dahlberg, Sebastian Kohl et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2026

This article bridges the gap between inequality and segregation research by introducing a method to decompose income segregation across spatial units, income groups, and income sources, applied to detailed full-population register data for Sweden from 1991 to 2017. Sweden’s sharp rise in income inequality—driven largely by capital income gains among top earners—has coincided with intensifying spatial sorting, especially within cities. We find tha…

  • Age at Arrival and Immigrant Segregation

Open Access•Cristina Bratu, Matz Dahlberg et al.•ARTICLE•International Migration Review•2026•Referências: 21

Studies of urban segregation have paid little attention to when immigrants arrive, whereas research on age at arrival has rarely considered segregation as an outcome. This study bridges these two literatures. Exploiting variation in age at arrival between siblings, we causally show that immigrants who arrive at younger ages are more likely to live in less segregated neighborhoods as adults, with the effect being particularly pronounced among refu…

  • Immigration, new religious symbols, and the dynamics of neighborhoods

Open Access•Ina Blind, Matz Dahlberg•ARTICLE•Journal of Regional Science•2020

Last decades' non‐western immigration to Europe has resulted in culturally and religiously more diverse populations in many countries. One manifestation of this diversification is new features in the cityscape. Using a quasiexperimental approach, in which an unexpected political process that led way to the first public call to prayer from a mosque in Sweden is combined with rich, daily, information on housing sales and detailed monthly informatio…

  • Post-WWI military disarmament and interwar fascism in Sweden

    Open Access•Matz Dahlberg, Helene Berg et al.•ARTICLE•Historical Methods A Journal of…•2019•Referências: 14

The emergence of anti-democratic movements is a central puzzle to social science. We study a novel and rich historical dataset covering Swedish municipalities during the interwar years and find a strong link between the presence of a military garrison and the emergence of fascist parties. We interpret these results as suggesting that fascist mobilization in Sweden was driven by discontent with the process of disarmament brought about by democrati…

  • Estimating Preferences for Local Public Services Using Migration Data

    Open Access•Matz Dahlberg, Matias Eklöf et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2012•Citada por: 8•Referências: 15

Using Swedish micro data, the paper examines the impact of local public services on community choice. The choice of community is modelled as a choice between a discrete set of alternatives. It is found that, given taxes, high spending on child care attracts migrants. Less conclusive results are obtained with respect to the role of spending on education and elderly care. High local taxes deter migrants. Relaxing the independence of the irrelevant …

  • Ethnic Diversity and Preferences for Redistribution

Matz Dahlberg, Karin Edmark et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•2012•Citada por: 81•Referências: 8

This paper investigates the causal link between the ethnic diversity in a society and its inhabitants’ preferences for redistribution. We exploit exogenous variation in immigrant shares stemming from a nationwide program placing refugees in municipalities throughout Sweden during 1985–94 and match data on refugee placement to panel survey data on inhabitants of the receiving municipalities. We find significant, negative effects of increased immig…

  • Do politicians’ preferences correspond to those of the voters? An investigation of political representation

  • On the Vote-Purchasing Behavior of Incumbent Governments

    Open Access•Matz Dahlberg, Eva Johansson•ARTICLE•American Political Science Review•2002•Citada por: 179•Referências: 18

In this paper we investigate whether there are any tactical motives behind the distribution of grants from central to lower-level governments. We use a temporary grant program that is uniquely suitable for testing theories of vote-purchasing behavior of incumbent governments. The temporary grant program differs from traditional intergovernmental grants in several aspects, most importantly in the sovereign decision-making power given to the incumb…
