  • ‘Made up’ and evolving – or already set in stone? Producing geotourism in the Niagara Region

Ashley Weaver, Adam Weaver•ARTICLE•Current Issues in Tourism•2026

What are the origins of niche tourism? The making of a form of niche tourism is explained by more than the economic forces of supply and demand and socio-demographic factors. An integrated web of classificatory practices, people, institutions, knowledge, experts, and place-based factors is involved. This web, derived from the ideas of philosopher Ian Hacking, constitutes a field of niche tourism production. Geotourism and geotourists appear as su…

  • What is Home? The Perspectives of Traveling Professional Workers in Vietnam

My Nguyen Dien Tran, Ashley Weaver et al.•ARTICLE•Tourism Culture & Communication•2019

Defining home has become a complex matter in a mobile world. With many people now able to move fairly freely and having a number of options with respect to where they can reside, the conventional concept of home that links it to one particular place is no longer as useful. Drawing from a qualitative study of 34 traveling professional workers (TPWs) in Da Nang and Hoi An in Vietnam, the article explores how home is perceived among this group of in…

  • Family Holidays

Heike Schänzel, Heike A Schänzel et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Leisure Research•2005

Holidays with children have largely been marginalised in research that examines leisure travel. This paper is a critical review of the available literature and presents a summary of themes relevant for the study of family holidays. Most tourism work is market-driven and from an adult perspective, with children treated as passive members of the family. Neglected areas include the social and cultural dimensions of the family holiday experience, suc…

  • Spaces of Containment and Revenue Capture

    Ashley Weaver, Adam Weaver•ARTICLE•Tourism Geographies•2005•Citada por: 35•Referências: 1

This paper explores the notion that cruise ships can be conceptualized as spaces of containment. The cruise ships that perhaps best exemplify containment are 'super-sized' cruise ships. In this paper, super-sized cruise ships are defined as vessels that can accommodate more than 2,000 tourists. These ships are built for the purpose of revenue capture. In fact, they could be viewed as travel destinations since they have become places where many to…
