Athens in the Fourth Century
In the fifth century the arche stands for the imperialism of Athens in all its strength (and its weaknesses). In the fourth century one might expect the Second Confederacy to perform a like service, of offering the aids ( tekmeria ) through which to interpret the imperialism of this later generation of Athenians. Have they learned something? Have they forgotten anything? In the scope of this essay there would be no point, clearly, in trying to su…
Imperialism in the Ancient World
The economics of imperialism, its political background and institutional frameworks, the material benefits it conferred, the ideologies of ruler and ruled - these are some of the more important aspects of imperialism discussed in this volume. In presenting the evidence for ancient imperialims and suggesting concepts and methods of interpretation these articles, which are the work of the Cambridge University Research Seminar in Ancient History, ra…
Philip of Macedon's Early Interventions in Thessaly (358–352 B.C.)
In his stimulating article on this topic Mr. Christopher Ehrhardt sought to show that there is no good reason to believe in any intervention by Philip of Macedon in Thessaly earlier than his campaign of 353. The second half of his paper is devoted to the date of Philip's capture of Pagasae, which Diodorus appears to put in the Athenian archon year 354/3 after the fall of Methone, a date adopted by most modern interpreters accepting the emendation…

Alexander the Great and an Experiment in Government
In early summer of the year 334, only a few weeks after his crossing into Asia Minor and perhaps only a week or two after his first victory in Asia at the river Granicus, Alexander was in Sardes making arrangements for the future government of the satrapy of Lydia, the second of the Persian satrapies to be annexed in this way. Besides appointing in each case a Macedonian to be satrap in place of the former Persian official, and besides making cer…
Some Habits of Thucydides when introducing Persons
Altogether in his History Thucydides finds occasion to mention about 530 persons, of whom 496 are men, twenty-two are heroes, seven are gods and six are women. Most of these people are never introduced or described in any way, so that the mere presence of an introductory phrase or description in itself may be thought to have some significance. Especially, Thucydides is notoriously reticent about the private and personal affairs of his public char…
