The Role of Replication Studies in Theory Building
At least since Meehl’s (in)famous 1978 article, the state of theorizing in psychology has often been lamented. Replication studies have been presented as a way of directly supporting theory development by enabling researchers to more confidently and precisely test and update theoretical claims. In this article I use contemporary work from philosophy of science to make explicit and emphasize just how much theory development is required before “goo…
Model-Based Theorizing in Cognitive Neuroscience
Weisberg ( [2006] ) and Godfrey-Smith ( [2006] , [2009] ) distinguish between two forms of theorizing: data-driven ‘abstract direct representation’ and modelling. The key difference is that when using a data-driven approach, theories are intended to represent specific phenomena and so directly represent them, while models may not be intended to represent anything and so represent targets indirectly, if at all. The aim here is to compare and analy…

Measures of Consciousness
Consciousness is now a hot topic in both philosophy and the cognitive sciences, yet there is much controversy over how to measure it. First, it is not clear whether biased subjective reports should be taken as adequate for measuring consciousness, or if more objective measures are required. Ways to benefit from the advantages of both these measures in the form of 'Type 2' metacognitive measures are under development, but face criticism. Research …
Old Problems with New Measures in the Science of Consciousness
Introspective and phenomenological methods are once again being used to support the use of subjective reports, rather than objective behavioural measures, to investigate and measure consciousness. Objective measures are often seen as useful ways of investigating the range of capacities subjects have in responding to phenomena, but are fraught with the interpretive problems of how to link behavioural capacities with consciousness. Instead, gatheri…

Education for Social Work
Prefatory note : This paper was originally written under another title as part of a conference programme, and is now reprinted by kind permission of the Editor of "Social Work" (the UK journal of this name) who first published it in Vol. XXVI No. 4 1969. It is not intended to imply (as some readers have thought) that it is enough for social workers to understand the individual, even within his family and his sub- cultural setting. Clearly the soc…
