Symbolic association networks
A type of symbolic association network for the development of reputation is described and tested. Associations between people in these networks are not based on individual interaction, but rather are created by "reputational entrepreneurs" based on perceived symbolic association between people. We argue the intent of this type of connection is to add to the reputational information about those connected and we test whether a network of such assoc…
Neighborhood Racial Segregation Predict the Spatial Distribution of Supermarkets and Grocery Stores Better than Socioeconomic Factors in Cleveland, Ohio
Introduction The food environment influences the availability and affordability of food options for consumers in a given neighborhood. However, disparities in access to healthy food options exist, affecting Black and low-income communities disproportionately. This study investigated whether racial segregation predicted the spatial distribution of supermarkets and grocery stores better than socioeconomic factors or vice versa in Cleveland, Ohio. M…

Effects of vegetation restoration on accumulation and translocation of heavy metals in post‐mining areas
Vegetation restoration has been recognized as an effective ecological measure to mitigate soil heavy metal contamination in open‐pit mining areas. However, little is known about the processes of accumulation and translocation of heavy metals in naturally restored soil–plant systems in these areas. In this study, soil and plant samples were collected from three natural restoration sites of different post‐mining ages (2, 7, and 15 years) to investi…
Toward Measuring the Level of Spatiotemporal Clustering of Multi-Categorical Geographic Events
Human activity events are often recorded with their geographic locations and temporal stamps, which form spatial patterns of the events during individual time periods. Temporal attributes of these events help us understand the evolution of spatial processes over time. A challenge that researchers still face is that existing methods tend to treat all events as the same when evaluating the spatiotemporal pattern of events that have different proper…
Simulating the spatial diffusion of memes on social media networks
This article reports the findings from simulating the spatial diffusion processes of memes over social media networks by using the approach of agent-based modeling. Different from other studies, this article examines how space and distance affect the diffusion of memes. Simulations were carried out to emulate and to allow assessment of the different levels of efficiency that memes spread spatially and temporally. Analyzed network structures inclu…
Spatiotemporal analyses of religious establishments in coastal China
Spatiotemporal Evolution of Specialized Villages and Rural Development
Regional economic development is inherently uneven as determined by the local conditions and available resources. Specialized villages (SVs) in China played a very important role in the development and economic transformation in rural areas. By integrating regional spatial structure theory, multilevel network theory, and spatial interface theory, this article examines the spatial and temporal evolution of SVs in Henan Province, China. Results fro…

Effects of urbanization on ecosystem service values in a mineral resource-based city
Hispanic maternal and children's perceptions of neighborhood safety related to walking and cycling
This study examined neighborhood safety as perceived by children (mean age=10 years) and their mothers, and its association with children's physical activity. For all eight safety items examined, children perceived their environment as less dangerous than mothers (p 0.10). The maternal perception model explained the highest percentage of variance (R(2)=0.26), compared to the children's perception model (R(2)=0.22). Findings suggest that future st…
