Limnological responses to fire and carbonate dynamics in a tropical shallow lake (central Mexico)
Multi-proxy paleoecological analysis of a high-altitude site in central Mexico
High-mountain lakes constitute key archives of past environmental dynamics and climate change. This study aims to reconstruct Holocene vegetation dynamics, fire regimes and hydroclimatic history of a high-altitude pond in central Mexico using a multiproxy approach. The Nahualac pond is located on the NW flank of the Iztaccíhuatl volcano at 3900 m asl. This multiproxy investigation integrates the analysis of pollen, non-pollen palynomorphs, diatom…
Environmental changes in central Mesoamerica in the Archaic and Formative periods
This study aims to improve the understanding of climatic fluctuations in the southern Basin of Mexico (BM) during the Archaic (11,500 – 4,000 cal bp ) and Formative (4,000 – 2,000 cal bp ) archaeological periods, when early sedentary settlements at the Zohapilco and Atlapulco sites developed from ∼8,000 – 7,500 cal bp . This study is based on the analysis of diatoms, pollen, microalgae, charcoal, magnetic susceptibility, geochemistry (organic car…
Climate and volcanic impacts on neotropical vegetation over the last 500 years in Mexico
Climatic and anthropogenic influences on vegetation changes during the last 5000 years in a seasonal dry tropical forest at the northern limits of the Neotropics
Seasonal dry tropical forest (STDF) is a widespread vegetation type in western Mexico. Generally, this type of forest develops in semihumid habitats where lacustrine basins are scarce, preventing documentation of the vegetation history and forest dynamics using a paleoecological approach. Here, we present a palynological record from the Santa Maria del Oro crater lake, located within the distribution area of the STDF and the adjacent dry oak fore…
The Holocene history of a tropical high-altitude lake in central Mexico
High-altitude lakes are sensitive to modern and past climate changes. Given their low-water temperatures, alkalinity, and nutrient levels, small climatic differences can strongly affect their water chemistry, and/or biodiversity. In central Mexico, there are only two high-altitude lakes, and both are within the crater of the Nevado de Toluca volcano. Here, we present a paleolimnological record from one of these lakes: La Luna. Previous paleoenvir…
Sediment carbon storage increases in tropical, oligotrophic, high mountain lakes
Climatic variability in the northern sector of the American tropics since the latest MIS 3
We inferred millennial-scale climate variations and paleohydrological conditions in the northern sector of the American tropics for 30.3–5.5 cal ka BP using geochemical characteristics of sediments from Lake Chalco in central Mexico. The sediment sequence is chronologically constrainedwith three tephra and nine radiocarbon dates. Temporal variations in titanium, total inorganic carbon, total organic carbon/titanium ratio, carbon/nitrogen ratio, a…
Climate, palaeohydrology and land use change in the Central Iberian Range over the last 1.6 kyr
A multiproxy study of a 7 m long sedimentary sequence from Lake La Parra (39°50.948′, 1°52′, 1014 m a.s.l.) supported by 11 14 C AMS and 210 Pb/ 137 Cs dates provides a robust, high-resolution hydrological and environmental variability record for the last 1600 years of the Las Torcas sinkhole Complex in the Central Iberian Range. The succession of depositional environments in Lake La Parra sinkhole is controlled by both changes in the regional wa…
Late Holocene palaeoecology of Lago Verde
Pb chronology and trace metal geochemistry at Los Tuxtlas, Mexico, as evidenced by a sedimentary record from the Lago Verde crater lake
Lago Verde is a fresh-water maar found on the lower slopes of San Martin volcano, at the Sierra de Los Tuxtlas, Mexico, currently the northernmost remnant of the tropical rain forest in America. 210 Pb and 137 Cs analyzed in a sediment core were used to reconstruct the historical fluxes of Ag, Cd, Cu, Pb, Hg and Zn to the site during the last ∼ 150 yr. The 210 Pb xs -derived sediment accumulation rates, the magnetic susceptibility, C/N ratios and…
Yr of vegetation history of the Upper Lerma, a tropical high-altitude basin in Central Mexico
Pollen analysis on a 9.54-m sediment core from lake Chignahuapan in the upper Lerma basin, the highest intermontane basin in Central Mexico (2570 m asl), documents vegetation and limnological changes over the past ∽23,000 14 C yr. The core was drilled near the archaeological site of Santa Cruz Atizapán, a site with a long history of human occupation, abandoned at the end of the Epiclassic period (ca. 900 AD). Six radiocarbon AMS dates and two wel…
A Holocene record from a former coastal lagoon in Bahia Kino, Gulf of California, Mexico
A 10-m-long core was recovered from the coastal flood plain on the eastern margin of the Gulf of California (Bahia Kino, Sonora). Sediments were analysed for loss-on-ignition, magnetic susceptibility, pollen, diatoms, ostracodes and foraminifera. Three levels were dated by 14 C. The combined data suggest that the site was flooded during the middle Holocene as sea level increased. At about 6600 yr BP the area was a freshwater to brackish marsh dom…
Lake Levels since about 40,000 Years Ago at Lake Chalco, near Mexico City
Diatoms, magnetic susceptibility, organic content, and 14 C ages of sediments from a 26-m core suggest that Lake Chalco, in the southern part of the basin of Mexico, went through a series of major fluctuations during the late Pleistocene and the Holocene. Before ca. 39,000 14 C yr B.P. the lake was very deep (about 8–10 m), alkaline, and saline. It then became shallow (
Late Pleistocene and Holocene Paleoenvironments of Chalco Lake, Central Mexico
In order to establish paleoenvironmental conditions during the late Quaternary, four cores from the Basin of Mexico (central Mexico) were drilled in Chalco Lake, located in the southeastern part of the basin. The upper 8 m of two parallel cores were studied, using paleomagnetic, loss-on-ignition, pollen, and diatom analyses. Based on 11 14 C ages, the analyzed record spans the last 19,000 14 C yr B.P. Volcanic activity has affected microfossil ab…
