Climate, livelihood insecurity, and violent conflict over fishing access in coastal Bangladesh
Artisanal fishing, a traditional livelihood passed down through the generations, has become increasingly insecure worldwide due to various climatic and non-climatic factors. Despite its significance, there is still limited research on how climate-related challenges interact with pre-existing livelihood vulnerabilities, and even fewer studies explore whether these combined effects heighten the risk of violent conflict for small-scale fishers. To a…
Exploring the relationship between climate change events and migration decisions
Bangladesh is a low-lying deltaic nation with high vulnerability to climate-related hazards. Hatiya Island is located in Southern Bangladesh, and residents rely significantly on fishing and agriculture for their livelihoods. However, the island's primary production systems face a threat from intense and frequent sudden onset environmental hazards such as river erosion, cyclones, and flooding, as well as slow onset environmental hazards like salin…
Institutional analysis for scaling alternate wetting and drying for low-emissions rice production
This article provides a comprehensive institutional analysis to better understand the key conditions and incentives relevant for the uptake of alternate wetting and drying (AWD) – a climate-smart irrigation practice in Bangladesh. Practicing AWD in rice production can reduce water consumption by 30% and mitigate methane emissions by 30–70% without yield penalty. Primary research was conducted in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, and Sherpur Division…
Achieving ambitions
The agriculture sector contributes significantly to national greenhouse gas emissions in developing countries. Rice is a major contributor to methane emissions in Asia and many countries have recognised the potential to reduce their emissions by including rice sector targets in their nationally determined contributions (NDCs) in the Paris Agreement. The NDC commitments are voluntary emission reduction efforts submitted by each country to curb glo…

Informational Nudges to Encourage Pro-environmental Behavior
Two natural field experiments were implemented to examine the influence of framing effects on environmental behavior. The first study examined plastic bag use at a convenience store using low cost nudges: an informational message on a sign and interpersonal communication at check-out. We employed a 3 × 2 treatment design (positive message vs. negative message vs. no sign; each paired with both asking for bag vs. not asking for bag) and report the…
Financing climate change mitigation in agriculture
More than one-quarter of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions come from agriculture, forestry, and land-use change. As with other sectors of the economy, agriculture should also contribute to meeting countries’ emission reduction targets. Transformation of agriculture to low-carbon food systems requires much larger investments in low emission development options from global climate finance, domestic budgets, and the private sector. Innovative fin…

Where Do Taxonomic Categories Come from
This article addresses young children’s acquisition of knowledge of hierarchically organized taxonomic categories. It sets forth the proposal that children first form categories of objects that can substitute for one another within slots in events: slot-filler categories. These categories are experientially based and context-restricted, but can be labelled by superordinate terms. They form the basis for the acquisition of general superordinate ca…

Words in discourse
Word learning by young children is viewed as a problem of deriving meaning from the use of forms in discourse contexts. Uses of causal and temporal terms in private speech by a child studied longitudinally from 1;9 to 3;0 are analysed from this perspective. Evidence is presented that words are first constrained to uses in specific discourse contexts, and later used more flexibly and with greater control over the semantics of the terms. Derivation…
The relation of maternal language to variation in rate and style of language acquisition
The main thrust of this paper is to question whether in earlier studies the ‘motherese hypothesis’ has been adequately tested. The present study first explores concurrent relations between maternal and child language at an early age, using the Soyder, Bates & Bretherton (1981) questionnaire to assess vocabulary at 1;1. With a large sample of 45 subjects, videotaped at 1;1 and 1;8, it was possible to analyse earlier talkers separately from later t…

Communication Efficiency of Middle- And Lower-Ses Dyads
This study investigated the efficiency of communication between children from different social-class backgrounds. Eight same-sex pairs of fifth graders—half boys and half girls—were formed into dyadic groupings by combining lower- and middle-SES children into the four possible speaker-listener combinations. Task success depended on the efficiency of the verbal communication between the pair. The listener was allowed to give feedback in one condit…
Competition, Cooperation, and Fair Play
Sport in America is receiving much criticism for its emphasis on competition, which is blamed for encouraging dishonesty, violence, and dehumanization. Some critics suggest the elimination of athletics and replacement with cooperatively struc tured activities as a solution. In effect, competition and cooperation are being seen as opposites. However, this article analyzes competition and cooperation as separate social processes and points out that…
