  • Morphological characteristics of a human talus discovered at Hijiridaki Cave in Oita Prefecture

Open Access•Yoshikazu Kitagawa, Kinya Yasui et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropological Science•2001

In 1983, a human left talus was discovered at Hijiridaki Cave in Oita Prefecture by a surface survey. This talus was highly fossilized and contains fluorine much more than the human skeletal remains excavated from the same cave in 1962 (Matsu'ura, 1984). Since the human skeletal remains found in 1962 were accompanied with microliths dated to ca. 14 kyr BP, the talus was expected to be dated in the Pleistocene.Usual features were observed on the p…

  • Tumor-like Lesions in a Human Skeleton from the Himrin Basin of Iraq

Open Access•Yo Wada, Jiro Ikeda et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Anthropological…•1987

This paper describes a human skeletal remain from the Himrin basin of Iraq affected by tumor-like lesions localized in the skull, mandible, scapulae, humeri, ribs, sternum, vertebrae including sacrum, hip bones, and femora. After anthropological, anatomical, and roentgenological observations and comparison with various diseases resulting in osteolytic destructive lesion with characteristic features, the authors conclude that a slow-growing benign …

  • Probable Treponematosis in Human Skeletons from the Himrin Basin of Iraq

Open Access•Yo Wada, Jiro Ikeda et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Anthropological…•1987

The purpose of this paper is, first, to present the brief outline of human treponematoses in the World, and second, to appreciate the clinical, osteological, and epidemiological manifestations of treponematosis (endemic syphilis) in Mesopotamia (Iraq) with the paleopathological descriptions on new two skeletons of the Islamic period. The two human skeletal remains which had been excavated from Tell Gubba in the Himrin basin of Iraq showed remarkab…

  • Interpopulation Variations of the Frontal Sinus Measurements

    Open Access•Jiro Ikeda•ARTICLE•The Journal of Anthropological…•1982

The frontal sinuses of 829 crania from Kyoto, Kinki, Hokuriku, Ryukyu, Ainu, Korea-China, and Jomon populations were examined radiographically, and their measurements such as height, width and area were compared between these 7 populations. All the measurements except for the area, and square roots of the total area show normal distributions. No bilateral differences was noted, but sex and age differences were significant. Multivariate tests sugg…

  • Geographic Variation of the Anthropometric Measurements in the Japanese Islands

Open Access•Jiro Ikeda, Akira Tagaya•ARTICLE•The Journal of Anthropological…•1980

A number of studies since BAELZ (1883) have been done on the geographic variation of anthropometric measurements of the Japanese, but this problem has not been fully revealed. To examin the geographic variation of anthropometric data in the Japanese Islands, a multivariate analysis is conducted on the extensively collected data from 706 local populations for male and 609 for female, which were obtained during about a decade in the 1950's and alre…

  • On a Human Skull of the Medieval Age with Injuries by Sword Cut

Open Access•Jiro Ikeda, Akira Tagaya•ARTICLE•The Journal of Anthropological…•1979

A male skull with gashes by swords on its left temporal and left facial skeleton was found at Karasuma-Demizu, Kamigyo, Kyoto. The skull which was supposed to be reburied there in 16 century A. D. shows the craniometrical chracteristics both of the Medieval people and of his individuality

  • A Multivariate Analysis of the Cranial Measurements of the Ryukyu Islanders (Males)

Open Access•Akira Tagaya, Jiro Ikeda•ARTICLE•The Journal of Anthropological…•1976

The cranial measurements of the Ryukyu Islanders (males) were examined by multivariate analysis. There is a clear separation between the Okinawa and Amami districts among the Ryukyu populations. As a result of a comparison among 8 populations in the Ryukyu Islands and Honshu-Kyushu, it is clear that the Ryukyu Islanders are a local group of the Japanese people. Comparison among the Ryukyu people, Honshu-Kyushu Japanese and their surrounding popul…

  • Craniometry of Miyako Islanders, the Ryukyus

    Open Access•Jiro Ikeda•ARTICLE•The Journal of Anthropological…•1974

The author investigated 135 modern skulls without mandible, consisted 85 male, 48 female and 2 sex-unknown, from Nagabaka in Shimajiri district, Hirara city, Miyako Is., the Ryukyus. Nagabaka would be used as the cemetery during the time between one and two centuries ago, judging from the type of ceramics found there and informations from the villagers, etc.Table 1 shows cranial measurements and indices of Miyako skulls. Comparing craniometrical …

  • Head Measuremants in the Light of Family Influences

    Open Access•Jiro Ikeda•ARTICLE•The Journal of Anthropological…•1953

I began this study with the question to what extent the shape of head is hereditary, and then investigated the extent of resemblance of the shape among families. The study of twins has been regarded as the most important approach to the question of human heredity. It has been done by SIEMENS, v. VERSCHUER and many other scientists. In the study of twins, however, materials are extremely limited, especially there are very few adult twins available f…

  • Human Bones at Zingayama, Yamaguchi Prefecture

The site is at Zingayama, Kutanabe, Sagamura, Kumage County, Yamaguchi Prefecture, on the top of a hill about 15 meters high.A stone coffin, so called Gist, was found about several years ago, and the human bones were obtained in it. The cist is made of slate, and 160cm in breadth and 29cm in depth. The inside walls of the cist were red-coloured.The skull in the coffin is well-preserved. It is presumed to be of a male in adult. The light vermilion…
