Knowledge and Sacredness
The importance of the notion of sacredness is well recognized, but its central characteristics remain elusive. A solution can be found by shifting the focus of attention from the objects, persons or rituals which are deemed to be sacred to the statements about those objects. Such statements are accepted by the believer as unquestionably true while being unprovable. Sacredness is thus a feature of statements, not of objects. Sacredness is a proced…

A preventive excavation managed in 2011 at the site named la Jardelle (Dissay, Vienne) has lead the discovery of circular and quadrangular ditch enclosures. Several of them delivered ceramics with shapes and decorations attributable to the Late Bronze Age Middle and Final stages. One of these vases is decorated with geometrical motives made with very well preserved tin strip, which constitutes an exceptional discovery in the West of France. The s…

Hereditary stratification in middle-range societies
Hereditary stratification is usually explained in relation to economic complexity. However, the ethnographic evidence does not readily support such explanations. Examples from Southeast Asia, Melanesia, Polynesia, and the West Coast of Canada suggest that hereditary stratification derives from the social construction of leadership

Iban inequality
INEQUALITY Appel1 (1978: 61) reflects the view of many social scientists when he points out that some of the Borneo societies practising swidden agriculture "have essentially egalitarian social systems, while others have highly developed systems of social stratification".I argue that the contrast between such societies has been overemphasized. In particular, the Iban have been seen as a paradigm of egalitarianism, but if we analyse their social st…
