Communicating Contested Science in a Polarized World
This qualitative study investigates scientists’ views on and experiences of collaborating with journalists and engaging in science communication (SciCom) about contested science issues, such as climate change, vaccines, and genetically modified organisms. 27 interviews were conducted, and thematic analysis of the data revealed five themes. This qualitative study uses inductive thematic analysis to investigate how journalists and their readers perceive scientists. The data-driven approach was applied to 84 articles (reporting on the contested science issues of climate change, vaccines, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs)) and their associated comment sections. Norms concerning the recognition of victimhood in postconflict societies
Acknowledging the victims on both sides of a conflict is crucial to peacebuilding and reconciliation. However, recognizing the victims of one community can challenge an opposing group's conflict narrative, particularly when their own group is seen as the primary victim. Social media’s networked form of communication provides people with bodies that are combinations of embodied and technologically mediated action.
