Psychological distress inequality between employed men and women
This study examines an exposure model in which the work and family stressors and the access to resources are gendered and contribute to explaining the psychological distress inequality between sex categories, both directly and indirectly through work-family conflict. A multilevel path analysis conducted on a random cross-sectional sample of 2026 Canadians workers from 63 establishments was performed. Our exposure model fully explains the higher l…
Sex, Gender Dynamics, Differential Exposure, and Work-Family Conflict
This study tested a differential exposure explanation of the association between sex categories and work-family conflict. It addresses the question of why men and women may experience similar or dissimilar levels of work-family conflict and tests whether differences are due to their different gendered demands and resources. Drawing from a sample of 1,751 employed adults from 63 workplaces, the results suggest that women spend less time in paid em…

College Alcohol-Control Policies and Students' Alcohol Consumption
The aims of this study were twofold: a) to investigate the impact of higher education institutional alcohol-control policies on students' drinking, and b) to determine whether a differential exposure to such policies based on students' place of residence (on/off campus) was a significant source of variability in their drinking practices and patterns. The data was drawn from the 2004 Canadian Campus Survey, a large epidemiological survey examining…

Social structures, agent personality and workers' mental health
This study examines the role of occupations and work conditions in psychological distress with a model of social action in which psychological distress results from stress created by the constraintsresources of structures of daily life, macrosocial structures, and agent personality. Using longitudinal data from 6611 workers nested in 471 occupations, multilevel regression analyses confirm the model. Occupations account for 1.6 percent of the vari…
Does work really cause distress? The contribution of occupational structure and work organization to the experience of psychological distress
Do occupation and work conditions really matter? A longitudinal analysis of psychological distress experiences among Canadian workers
This study analyses the relationship between occupation, work conditions and the experience of psychological distress within a model encompassing the stress promoted by constraints-resources embedded in macrosocial structures (occupational structure), structures of daily life (workplace, family, social networks outside the workplace) and agent personality (demography, physical health, psychological traits, life habits, stressful childhood events)…

The Prevalence of Elevated Psychological Distress Among Canadian Undergraduates
For a study of elevated psychological distress, the authors used data based on a national probability sample of 7,800 Canadian undergraduate students from 16 universities. They used the 12-item General Health Questionnaire to assess mental health. Thirty percent of the students in the sample reported elevated psychological distress, which varied significantly according to sex, region, year of study, and recreational and academic orientation. Rate…

A Predatory Social Structure
Archival data about, and contemporary accounts of, the Gin Acts illustrate the careers of 198 informers known to have operated in Westminster between 1737 and 1741, providing an idea of their interrelationships. Visible links among the informers appear to have been generally weak. Most of the sample at hand operated as isolates on an opportunistic basis, informing only once. Their network, such as it was, seems to have functioned primarily as a c…
Positional Role Changes and Drinking Patterns
This study of heavily drinking males in the general population assesses the effect of positional role changes on drinking behaviors. The data are derived from a longitudinal study over a three-year period (1992–1995) of a representative sample of 617 male heavy drinkers from the Quebec (Canada) adult population. Three types of positional roles have been examined: employment, marital, and parental status. This study examined two dimensions of the …
When at risk? Drinking contexts and heavy drinking in the Montreal adult population
The purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics of contexts associated with heavier alcohol intake. Data come from a telephone survey carried out in April 1993 with a random sample of the metropolitan Montreal adult population (Quebec, Canada). Drinking contexts were investigated with regard to the situational setting (circumstances, time and location) and the relational setting (drinking partners’ relationship and sociodemographic s…
Construction d’un programme en santé communautaire
This article describes the implementation of a program seeking to transform a low-rent, “social housing” establishment for the elderly into an establishment offering “sheltered housing.” Modifications made to the program during the course of implementation are addressed by the authors as natural occurrences, inherent in the construction of any innovative program and its installation in a new context. The analysis focuses on processes of mutual ad…
