Analysis of a Mammillated Lead‐Barium Glazed Pottery Ornament on the Pommel of a Yue‐Style Bronze Sword With Bird Script
In China, bronze swords from the Wu and Yue regions of the Warring States period were renowned far and wide. Their pommels were often decorated with concentric rings, jade, turquoise, and other ornaments. In 2014, a bird‐script Yue‐style bronze sword was unearthed from Tomb M675, Phase III of the Jinding site in Linzi, Shandong. Analytical results indicated that this bronze sword pommel is centrally inlaid with a mammillated lead‐barium glazed po…
A Study on the Craftsmanship and Properties of Masonry Artifacts from the Jinshanling Great Wall, China
The Jinshanling Great Wall was constructed during the Ming Dynasty. It has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List and is also designated as a Major National Historical and Cultural Site, as ratified and announced by the State Council. This project involved the analysis and testing of the composition, firing temperature, manufacturing techniques, and physical properties of masonry artifacts from the Jinshanling Great Wall, including insc…
Artificial Cengqing in the “Five Stones”
Purplish‐blue granular materials from the “Five Stones” set excavated from a grave‐quelling jar in Late Han tomb M17 at Sanmenxia (Henan, China) were analyzed by OM, SEM‐EDS, and micro‐Raman spectroscopy. The results identify, for the first time, Chinese Purple, Chinese Blue, and Chinese Dark Blue as artificial Cengqing in a mortuary ritual context. Associated quartz, witherite, barite, tenorite, covellite, and minor calcite constrain possible ra…
Corrosion microstructure and coloration mechanism of ancient Chinese bronze mirrors
A study on the subsistence strategy of the Qingjian Xinzhuang site in Northern Shaanxi region during the late Shang period
Virtual reconstruction on original color of color-faded painting on bronze mirrors supported by non-destructive spectroscopic techniques
Virtual reconstruction of color-faded painting on bronze mirrors relies on limited information. Existing techniques face significant difficulties in the recognition and reconstruction of missing patterns at both structural and iconographic levels. Painting on bronze in burial environments is prone to decay, fading, contamination, and corrosion, leading to defective areas. Reconstruction of patterns is crucial for archeology and art history. Moreo…

Comparison of iron deposits removing material from the marine archaeological wood of Nanhai I shipwreck
Iron deposits are commonly found in marine archaeological wood, causing acidification, degradation, and mechanical damage to marine archaeological wood. This study focused on extracting iron deposits from loose wood samples taken from the Nanhai I shipwreck. The removal efficiency of iron deposits in wood using materials, such as EDTA-2Na, DTPA, C6H17N3O7, Na2C2O4, amidoxime cellulose, DFO, EDTA-2Na-H2O2, DTPA-H2O2, EDTA-2Na-Na2S2O4, and DTPA-Na2…

Archaeometric analysis of textile fiber dyes from the Topater-1 Site, Calama, northern Chile, Middle Formative Period (ca. 400–200 BCE)
Fuzzy comprehensive evaluation of the compatibility of restoration materials — Case study in the rammed earth restoration of the M2 Han tomb in Dingtao, Shandong Province
Searching for the earliest use of limestone as a flux in Chinese high-fired ceramic glazes—evidence from Sr isotopic analysis of Chinese northern porcelain
The geology of Tianshui‐Qin'an area of the western Loess Plateau and the chemical characteristics of its Neolithic pottery
The difference in the chemical compositions between Neolithic pottery from the eastern and western ends of the northern Chinese Loess Plateau has been known for some time, and a number of possible explanations have been proposed. However, a full understanding of the difference is yet to be achieved. Based on recent geological studies of the Tianshui‐Qin'an area on the western Loess Plateau, the present study establishes a logical connection betwe…
Identification of PbO (BaO) faience from an early and middle Warring States period cemetery at Zhaitouhe, northern Shaanxi, China
Low‐temperature vitreous materials fluxed with lead (and barium) appeared in the early Warring States period ( c .fifth century bce ) in ancient China. A range of lead vitreous products fluxed with the same agent, including faience/glass beads, glazed pottery and Chinese blue (purple) pigment, were developed subsequently. This study carries out scientific analysis of six vitreous beads unearthed from the Zhaitouhe cemetery site in northern Shaanx…
