  • Remembrances of Li Xueqin (1933–2019)

Open Access•Sarah Allan, Genevieve Barman et al.•ARTICLE•Early China•2019

I first met Li Xueqin in 1981, when he was a visiting fellow at Cambridge, and I was teaching at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London. Paul Thompson and I took a train to Cambridge to invite him to London for a few weeks-Paul said we should pay a scholar of his caliber the courtesy of going in person rather than writing to him. In London, Li spent an hour or so every morning happily working his way through all of the galleries of …

  • Transitions in pathways of human development and carbon emissions

    Open Access•William F Lamb, J Steinberger et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2014

  • Fruitful Sites

    Frances Wood, Craig Clunas•ARTICLE•Garden History•1997

Gardens are sites that can be at one and the same time admired works of art and valuable pieces of real estate. As the first account in English to be wholly based on contemporary Chinese sources, this beautifully illustrated book grounds the practices of garden-making in Ming Dynasty China (1369–1644) firmly in the social and cultural history of the day. Who owned gardens? Who visited them? How were they represented in words, in paintings and in …

  • Did Marco Polo go to China

    Frances Wood•ARTICLE•Asian Affairs•1996

Marco Polo's book The Description of the World is one of the classics of medieval literature, describing his epic journey to China and subsequent return to Italy. He has become a cultural icon bridging East and West, his name known by adults and children alike. This is a piece of historical detective work, marking the 700th anniversary of Polo's journey, and questions whether the explorer ever reached the country he so vividly described. Why, wit…
