Promoting Dialogue About Current Issues in the Media in Secondary English Classrooms
As young people engage with the media landscape around them, they encounter a deterioration in public discourse relating to contemporary social, political and cultural issues. To address this breakdown, and to help their students become critical and informed citizens, English teachers are utilising classroom dialogue. The aim of our study was to understand how secondary English teachers in Victoria, Australia, promote dialogue in their classrooms…
Problematising scripted curricula
This paper critically examines the proliferation of scripted curricula across Anglophone educational systems. Building on Nikolaidis, Fitz and Warnick’s (2024) prescriptive continuum, we identify three distinct but interconnected script typologies: pedagogical, curricular, and behavioural. Drawing on examples from the United States, England and Australia, we analyse four interrelated problem framings - efficiency, quality assurance, expertise, an…
Creating spaces of learning in academia
This paper analyses the move by an Australian university faculty to a new building featuring open plan and alternative workspaces. Through the lens of the theory of practice architectures, the paper examines how the new built spaces both enabled and constrained the professional learning practices of academics. Drawing on a case study of the transition, the paper explores the ways in which the move to the new building disrupted existing ecologies …
How built spaces influence practices of educators’ work
In this era of the global pandemic of Covid 19, built spaces for educating have taken on a special significance. As this special issue was underway in 2021, much of our home country of Australia was living under conditions of hard lockdown as the Delta variant spread. Internationally, we saw similar conditions. Schools and universities operated virtually or at skeletal levels. Learning and teaching were undertaken in the home and the conditions t…
Knowledge in the Making
The growing interest in the history of curriculum and pedagogy in subject English might be seen as a response to educational reforms that are replacing earlier, progressive understandings of subject English with narrowly technical understandings of teacher professional knowledge and practice. This essay emerges out of an intergenerational, dialogic inquiry with late career and retired English teachers in Victoria, Australia. The study, called ‘Th…
University–School Partnerships in English Pre-service Teacher Education
Evidence has been accumulating for some time about the impact of standards-based education reforms on schools and schooling, but there has been little research investigating the influence of these reforms on university-based initial teacher education (ITE). This article critically inquiries into the effects of these reforms on an ITE co-teaching project where a secondary English teacher in a school was seconded to work for a year as a teacher edu…
Beauty and the Beautiful Beast
This paper interprets Stephenie Meyer's Twilight saga as a contemporary rewriting of the ‘Beauty and the Beast’ fairy tale in which the heroine, Bella Swan, quests for a sexual subjectivity and agency not readily available to her in mainstream heterosexual culture. Using work on the ‘missing discourse’ of female desire, it is noted that a normative understanding of heterosexuality still allocates the ownership of desire along gender lines, where …
