Early Modern Women's Complaint
Fictions of Production
This essay builds upon work surrounding reception and the figure of the early modern woman writer to examine textual instances in which women’s writing has been “found” or manufactured: where writing falsely or tenuously attributed to historical women was circulated under their signatures as their voice. These fictions of production circulated as prosopopoeiae within women’s lifetimes alongside writers’ own scribal and print textual productions, …
Woman-like complaints
Although complaint was a flexible and generative mode in the expression of Renaissance love, mobilising a wide range of antecedents in order to express both grief and protest in response to love’s absence, it has achieved little traction as a critical term. This essay foregrounds the ways in which amatory complaint was used for personal, rhetorical and political gain in the English Renaissance, focusing on the poems embedded in Lady Mary Wroth’s …
Cultures of Complaint
We overhear a woman weeping by the side of a river, her tears mingling with its water and her voice echoing back to her to amplify her complaint. In the late sixteenth century, when such complaints flourished, this abandonment could have devastating social and ec…

We argue that o…

Reading Mary Stuart's Casket Sonnets
The reception history of the casket sonnets attributed to Mary Queen of Scots is a rich archive of material, revealing the complex ways in which histories of reading intersect with the early modern woman writer's relationship to the institutions of authorship. By tracing the reception of these sonnets over four centuries, I argue that competing religious, historical, and geopolitical formations work to privilege or occlude Mary Stuart's authorshi…
Babysitter Killers Anddaughters of Death
Introduction
hosted by Newcastle University's Writing Cultures research group in May 2008. The conference had two related strands, critical and creative, and essays by creative practitioners of non-fiction have been published separately as a special issue of TEXT. This is not to say, however, that the essays collected here are distinct from those works by creative practitioners, particularly in their use of form and in their meta-textual concerns with writing…
