Designing sexual health services for young people
The aim of the study was to assess the suitability of the Thurstone paired comparison method for capturing the user voice, through a survey of young people's views on the most salient priorities for a sexual health service. A convenience sample of 161 12–24 year olds was used. Exploring the Gap Between Evidence and Judgement
The range of conditions necessary for valid and reliable assessment of clinical competence may result in a gap between amount of evidence available from performance and that required for safe inferences of competence. Dyslexic, Retarded and Normal Readers' Perceptions of the Qualities of Real and Ideal Class Teachers
In order to compare different types of readers' perceptions of both their own classroom teacher, and their ‘ideal’ classroom teacher, eight dyslexic, eight retarded and eight normal readers were asked to rank order nine teacher qualities, firstly as they pertained to their actual class teacher and secondly as they would pertain to an ‘ideal’ class teacher. Two Factor Analytic Studies of Dyslexic Sub‐types
S ummary . A factor analysis was carried out on psychometric data from each of two separate dyslexic populations, using an orthogonal solution. The first analysis, performed on 640 children referred for clinical assessment, yielded four factors. The first two represented literacy and intelligence factors respectively. Modality Preference and the Teaching of Reading and Spelling to Dyslexic Children
Three groups of six dyslexic children with auditory processing difficulties were taught basic literacy skills by one of three methods: (1) by training auditory processing skills; (2) by training visual processing skills; (3) by training a combination of both. The results indicated that children taught by methods (2) and (3) made most progress. Children taught through the auditory modality made no more progress than a matched control group who had…
The Itpa Visual Sequential Memory Task
S ummary . Four experiments were carried out to examine the different recall strategies employed in a diagnostic test of visual sequential memory (VSM). Briefly the results were as follows: Experiment 1 indicated that competent readers tend to use a verbal labelling strategy in the recall of visual stimuli, rather than visual memory per se. Experiment 2 suggested that the retention of the visual stimuli could be improved by the adoption of a verb…
