A Qualitative Evaluation of Structural and Social Determinants of Health, Black Race, and Perspectives of Prostate Cancer Risk and Early Detection

Syringe services programs (SSPs) provide critical evidence-based public health services that decrease harms from drug use for people who use drugs (PWUD). Many SSPs have experienced significant and evolving COVID-19-related disruptions. We aimed to characterize the impacts of COVID-19 on SSP operations in the United States approximately two years into the pandemic. teleconference and brief electronic survey evaluating the impacts of COVID-19 on p…
What do we do to help others feel better? The eight strategies of the Regulating Others’ Emotions Scale (Roes)
Theoretical models of interpersonal extrinsic emotion regulation (the regulation of others' emotions) recognize many different regulation strategies, yet existing assessments do not assess a wide number of strategies at a granular level. In the present research, we develop the Regulation of Others' Emotions Scale to capture eight extrinsic emotion regulation strategies (expressive suppression, downward social comparison, humor, distraction, direc…

Rapid transition of a preclinical health systems science and social justice course to remote learning in the time of coronavirus
As the coronavirus pandemic started, we rapidly transitioned a preclinical social justice and health systems sciences course at our medical school to asynchronous, remote learning. We describe processes, curricular innovations, and lessons learned. Small groups were converted into independent learning modules and lectures were given live via videoconferencing technology. We started with a simplified approach and then built technological capabilit…
Capturing the patient voice
Practice transformation efforts increasingly require integration of the patient voice into clinical care, often through the use of PROs. Learnings from our work highlight the importance of proactively considering how PROs will be used across the layers of healthcare organizations to optimize the design and governance of PROs
Implementation and Use of a Client-Facing Web-Based Shared Decision-Making System (MyCHOIS-CommonGround) in Two Specialty Mental Health Clinics
Electronic shared-decision making programs may provide an assistive technology to support physician-patient communication. This mixed methods study examined use of a web-based shared decision-making program (MyCHOIS-CommonGround) by individuals receiving specialty mental health services, and identified qualitative factors influencing adoption during the first 18 months of implementation in two Medicaid mental health clinics. T-tests and χ 2 analy…

Measurement of ability emotional intelligence
Emotional intelligence (EI) has attracted considerable interest amongst both individual differences researchers and those in other areas of psychology who are interested in how EI relates to criteria such as well-being and career success. Both trait (self-report) and ability EI measures have been developed; the focus of this paper is on ability EI. The associations of two new ability EI tests with psychometric intelligence, emotion perception, an…
Personality, Emotional Intelligence and Exercise
The associations of personality and self-report emotional intelligence (EI) with attitudes to exercise and self-reported exercise behaviour were investigated in a sample of 497 Canadian undergraduates. A positive attitude to exercise was negatively associated with Neuroticism and uncorrelated with other personality traits and EI. Exercise behaviour was positively associated with Extraversion and EI and negatively associated with Neuroticism. Stru…
The Alcohol-related Aggression Questionnaire
Although alcohol-related violence is a common problem, there is wide variability amongst individuals in the extent to which they engage in alcohol-related violence. To assist with identification of individual differences, we developed a comprehensive measure of alcohol-related aggression. Items for the Alcohol-related Aggression Questionnaire (ARAQ) were generated from a priori literature searches and administered to 226 males. Factor analysis re…
Personality, well-being and health correlates of trait emotional intelligence
Testing versus understanding human intelligence
Intelligence may be studied in 2 distinct ways, using a psychometric or a biological approach. The psychometric approach is focused on the assessment of a person's level of mental ability and documents individual differences between people in mental abilities. Biological studies seek those brain functions that cause individual differences in human mental abilities. The lack of overlap between these approaches means that it is unclear what the sco…

Personality traits and personality disorders
The structure of personality disorder traits was examined in a sample of 400 undergraduates who completed the personality disorder questionnaire from the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R (SCID-II). The relations between personality disorder and normal personality traits indexed by the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-Revised (EPQ-R) were examined. The three-cluster model of personality traits-as described in the DSM scheme-found equiv…
Cognitive and Organizational Structures
Relationships between the cognitive structures of organizational members and the structures of the organizations to which they belong have been the subject of considerable theoretical speculation. Limited empirical evidence suggests the two structures are related but the issue of directionality has not been investigated. The study reported here adopts an attribution theory perspective to test the causal nature of this relationship in an experimen…
