The Psychology of Politics
In writing The Psychology of Politics, Hans Eysenck had two aims in mind: to write a book about modern developments in the field of attitude studies which would be intelligible to the layman; and one that would integrate into one consistent theoretical system a large number of contributions on the topic from different fields. Eysenck believes that science has something to say about such problems as anti-Semitism, the origin and growth of fascist …

Personality and experimental psychology
It is suggested that the scientific status of psychology is put in danger by the lack of paradigms in many of its fields, and by the failure to achieve unification, psychology is breaking up into many different disciplines. One important cause was suggested by Lee Cronbach in his 1957 presidential address to the American Psychological Association: the continuing failure of the two scientific disciplines of psychology-the experimental and the corr…
Creativity and Personality
An attempt is made in this article to relate creativity to personality in a much more definitive way than has been done previously and to use the known correlates of personality to suggest a theory of creativity that would explain many of the phenomena associated with this concept. A causal chain is suggested reaching from DNA to creative achievement, based largely on experimental findings not usually considered in relation to creativity (e.g., l…
The Nature of Schizotypy
The matrix of intercorrelations between scales of schizotypy presented by Kendler and Hewitt in 1992 was reanalyzed, and results rather different from those reported by the original authors were found. The new structure shows good agreement with the theory of personality disorder published by Eysenck in 1987. In all, the different scales seem to fall into three groups or factors, identified as Neuroticism (N), Extraversion (E), and Psychoticism (…

Altruism and aggression
Five questionnaires measuring altruistic and aggressive tendencies were completed by 573 adult twin pairs of both sexes from the University of London Institute of Psychiatry Volunteer Twin Register. The questionnaires measured altruism, empathy, nurturance, aggressiveness, and assertiveness. The intraclass correlations for the five scales, respectively, were .53, .54, .49, .40, and .52 for 296 monozygotic pairs, and .25, .20, .14, .04, and .20 fo…
Cross-Cultural Comparisons
It is argued that criticisms of the use of indices of factor comparison to establish the identity of factors in personality inventories derived from different countries are mistaken. It is shown that on homologous scales the average indices of factor comparison between 24 countries come out at .98, whereas those of nonhomologous scales come out at .13. These values are almost identical with those obtained when males and females are compared in th…

Left-Wing Authoritarianism
Stone (1980) in his paper on The Myth of Left-Wing Authoritarianism attempts to present evidence to the effect that authoritarianism is essentially right-wing, and that although there are some left-wing authoritarians, their number is much smaller than that of right-wing authoritarians. Unfortunately his review of the literature is not as factual or objective as it might be, and his conclusions do not follow from the available data. It may be suf…

Mischel and the concept of personality
The various criticisms that Mischel has made of the state-trait approach to personality are considered and found to be lacking in substance. His major argument is that the actual inconsistency of behaviour is incompatible with the expectation of behavioural consistency that follows from the state-trait approach. However, Mischel has misread the evidence, and pays insufficient attention to the distinction between consistency at the intervening-var…

National differences in personality
Comparisons are reported between results on the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire obtained from 491 male and 480 female Slovene‐speaking Jugoslavs; the comparison groups were 2312 male and 3262 female English subjects. Factor analyses of item intercorrelations showed close correspondence between the factors extracted in the two national samples, with indices of factor comparison well in excess of 0.95, and with reliabilities in the Jugoslav sampl…
Fear Conditioning and Extinction in Rats at Different Times of Day
Random bred male animals (N = 48 rats) underwent classical fear conditioning, an extinction trial, and a subsequent fear retention test either in the morning or in the afternoon. Half of the animals in both groups had been deprived of food for 18 hours prior to testing and were offered some food in the final fear retention test, whereas the others carried on feeding ad lib. The four groups were further split up into groups of three animals with a…
Personality Differences between Prisoners and Controls
2,070 male prisoners and 2,442 male controls were administered the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire, which gives scores on Psychoticism, Extraversion, Neuroticism, and Lie scales. The groups were subdivided into age groups, ranging from 16 to 69 yr. at the extremes. It was found that the Lie scale disclosed little dissimulation in either group. Scores on Psychoticism, Extraversion, and Neuroticism fell with age for both prisoners and controls. P…
Personality and Mental Illness
The new Eysenck Personality Questionnaire was administered to 441 male and 441 female subjects, 63 in each of seven groups (normal, criminal, schizophrenic, endogenous depressive, personality disorder, anxiety state, reactive depression). Means and SDs are reported for the groups, and a discriminant function analysis was performed to estimate the relative positions of the groups in three-dimensional space. The groups were significantly separated …
Strain Differences in Acquisition and Extinction of Fear Responses in Rats
5 different strains of rats (Roman high and low avoiders, Maudsley reactive and non-reactive and random-bred animals) were subjected repeatedly to extinction trials following Pavlovian fear conditioning. The duration of the extinction trials was varied for different groups of animals. Fear was measured by latency of escape into the “safe” compartment in Exp. I and by step-down latency in Exp. II during a final fear-retention test. Results showed …

The Effects of Distraction on Pursuit Rotor Learning, Performance and Reminiscence
Five groups of thirty subjects were equated for performance on the pursuit rotor, and were then given massed practice under conditions of no distraction, a little, medium or considerable distraction, as well as a control distracting condition. It was found that performance declined proportionally to the amount of distraction given and that the effect of distraction was on performance only, and not on learning. During a subsequent rest pause half …
