"The Global Citizenship Commission was convened, under the leadership of former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and the auspices of NYU's Global Institute for Advanced Study, to re-examine the spirit and stirring words of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The result - this volume - offers a 21st-century commentary on the original document, furthering the work of human rights and illuminating the ideal of global citizenship. What does…

  • Academic Symposium 2006

Open Access•Jake Anderson, Ellen Brown et al.•ARTICLE•The University of Western Ontario…•2011

The Churchill West Peninsula (CWP) of northeastern Manitoba represents the southern extreme of Pre-Dorset occupation in the Subarctic barren grounds. In the summer of 2005, several archaeological sites were surveyed and excavated on the CWP, including a Pre-Dorset site called IeKn-12. My M.A. research seeks to assess Pre-Dorset strategies of technological organization at this site through lithic (stone tool and debitage) analysis. In doing so, I …

  • Beyond the crash

    Gordon Brown•BOOK•Beyond the crash•2010

Former British Prime Minister and Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown believes the international financial crisis can be reversed, but that the world's leaders must work together if we are to avoid a decade of lost jobs and low growth. Brown speaks both as someone who was in the room driving discussions that led to some crucial decisions, and as an expert renowned for his financial acumen. No one who had Brown's access has written about the …

  • The Ontological Turn in Education

Gordon Brown, Gordon L Brown•ARTICLE•Journal of Critical Realism•2009

This article explores some implications of using a critical realist theoretical framework for the study of education, in particular the core activities of learning and teaching. Many approaches have been made to understanding learning and teaching, but they tend to fall into one of two camps. The first includes approaches known as objectivism, instructivism and behaviourism, and is interpreted here as embodying principles of empiricism (positivis…

  • Toussaint's Clause

James Sidbury, Gordon Brown et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Southern History•2006

In its formative years, America, birthplace of a revolution, wrestled with a volatile dilemma. John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, and many other founding fathers clashed. What was to be the new republic's strategy toward a revolution roiling just off its shores? From 1790 to 1810, the disagreement reverberated far beyond Caribbean waters and American coastal ports. War between France and Britain, the great powers of the time, raged…

  • The Conditions for High and Stable Growth and Employment

    Open Access•Gordon D A Brown, Gordon Brown•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2001•Citada por: 13

I would like to thank the Royal Economic Society and the Scottish Economic Society for inviting me to speak today. It is a pleasure to be here in St Andrews to express my appreciation of the leading role that British economists, the Royal Economic Society and the Scottish Economic Society in particular have played over the years in the development of economic theory and practice. This paper discusses the conditions for stability and growth in the…

  • New global structures for the new global age

    Gordon Brown•ARTICLE•The Round Table•1999•Citada por: 2

In an era of independent and instantaneous capital markets, individual economies are no longer able to shelter from the effects of fast and sometimes destabilizing flows of capital. Many emerging markets are being caught up in the global financial turmoil, irrespective of the strength of their economies. But Britain's Chancellor argues that the answer is more rather than less globalization in the form of stronger structures to make globalization …

  • The role of long-term memory mechanisms in memory span

Open Access•Charles Hulme, Steven Roodenry et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1995•Citada por: 3

We present an experiment relating memory span for words and non-words of differing spoken lengths to speech rate. Linear functions related memory span to speech rate for both words and non-words. Recall of non-words, however, is substantially worse than for words and this difference is not attributable to differences in speech rate. Familiarizing subjects with the pronunciations of the nonwords increased memory span for them and these improvement…

  • Closing the Engineering Gap

    Open Access•Gordon Brown, Gordon S Brown•ARTICLE•IEEE Transactions on Education•1963

In the national debate about the shortage of people trained to advanced levels in modern technology, have we not overlooked the engineer already in practice? If the knowledge and skill of selected, key, practicing engineers were updated and reoriented, these men could help greatly to close the gap. As the pace of scientific advance continues, the knowledge of engineers who have been out of school for a number of years lags more and more. It appea…
